Zealots turn people off to God and religion. It's almost as bad as drugs. I used to be a zealot, actually I'm a recovering zealot :-) Just like drugs or alcohol, I thought being a fundy would stop all manner of abuse, but it didn't so there.

Cerebral fornication to the max! Some people come into recovery with no higher power. By working the steps most get one. I know a priest who was an agnostic before he got sober! I know of one person who claimed (to his dying day) that he was an atheist, he seemed pretty spiritual to me.
AA has no opinion on outside issues such as what religion is better than others or which one is the "right" one. That's the beauty of the program.

However, in this week's Enquirer an article about him states that he walked aroundt he ground of the rehab CHAIN SMOKING!

I wonder how they knew. When I was in rehab, though, you couldn't smoke on the unit. They would take you out for a "smoke break" roughly every two hours. It was the only way to get off the unit, so non-smokers and ex-smokers would come too. Then everyone would see how many cigarettes they could suck down in about 15 minutes. Several people started smoking again. Smoking is considered to be something to tackle down the road a piece.

"Recovery" and "repentance" are polar opposites. One recovers from a disease (which doesn't require one to take personal responsibility for sin), but one repents of one's sin (which is the essence of taking personal responsibility).

I'm curious as to where you get this. You've really got this backwards, and I suspect it's because you know little of the twelve step process. Accepting personal responsibility is a cornerstone of recovery. Using your terms "repentence" would be the very first step, and recovery is the process that follows from repentence to keep you clean.

You miss my point, which is that the biblical way of repentance can't be mixed with the psychobabble approach. The biblical way is confession of sin, repentance, and restitution, either by personal initiative or in response to church discipline. There's no place, biblically, for any psychology of recovery in this process.

BTW, the term "recovery" should only be used in its medical sense of physical recover from disease, not its psychological sense. The reason psychobabblers use this and other medical terms is to apply a patina of scientific legitimacy to theories derived, as another poster has mentioned, from the occult and from religions like Hinduism.

BTW, I say this having read Freud and Jung extensively.
