When he did the same, he was reported on by his own men, BEFORE he knew he was in deep do-do and turned himself in, then wrapped himself in the flag, and garnered the sympathy of a nation which had not heard the entire story."

Had not heard this part of the story.

Now as always I could be wrong. But I don't think he "wrapped himself in the flag", he admitted that what he did was wrong.
