This message is the first in a series about the pending Medicare prescription-drug bill.

Congress will soon vote on the most far-reaching and the most costly expansion of the federal government in our nation's history when it takes up the Medicare prescription-drug bill (H.R. 1). If H.R. 1 is approved by Congress and signed by President Bush, our country will never be the same. By comparison, the proposed Medicare prescription-drug "entitlement benefit" makes Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal and Lyndon B. Johnson's Great Society look like small and cheap federal programs.

Tragically, many of the biggest and most costly federal programs in our nation's history were negotiated in secret and then given to congressional members with little or no time for them to read, let alone study, the legislation itself. This is the age of instantaneous electronic communication... there is no excuse to repeat this except as an underhanded tactic to prevent ugly details from being discovered. Unfortunately, the Medicare prescription-drug bill will be no exception.

This is such a concern in the House of Representatives that on October 29, 2003, 41 House members signed a letter asking the House leadership for "at least three calendar days" to study the bill before having to vote on it. The second paragraph of the letter reads: "The general public will evaluate not only what Congress does regarding Medicare and prescription drugs, but the way in which it does it. A bill proposing such substantive changes to the Medicare system and costing an estimated $400 billion (400,000,000,000) over the next decade deserves the careful and thoughtful consideration of all Members." I just can't believe that the "gimme" generation cannot see how bad this will be for their children and grandchildren. Talk about mortgaging the future!

The very nature of this proposed entitlement lends the bill to "vote getting politics", rather than for the good of the nation. So rather than leave this up to a congress that won't even move to stop illegal aliens from not only entering the country without using legal avenues, they want to feed, educate, give them SS and medical help on the taxpayer tit. Therefore, I think this Medicare prescription-drug bill should be put to a vote by “We The People in the coming election. It is truly frightening to think of the pork Senators, like Ted Kennedy, Byrd, Leahy will tack onto it once in the Senate.

Actually its truly frightening to watch what the *REPUBLICAN* majority in the house and senate are *ALREADY* doing.

Why do people here focus on what the the democrats *might* do when the republicans are *already* doing it.

Lets not forget which party has caused *discretionary* spending to increase over 27% in two years and caused the national debt to double in just a few years...

Dear Congressman DeLay,

Since this Medicare prescription-drug bill would be enormously costly to the nations taxpayer, something many are not cognizant of, and the temptation to lard it with costly pork by politicians, I think the people should vote on it during the election of 2004. It must be made very clear what the bill means; who would benefit by it and what it will cost the taxpayer.

You are aware only some 40% pay Federal Income Tax now; this added burden would be enormous. Will state taxes be involved? How much more Bureaucracy will it entail? What provisions will be in place to stop corruption? And so on. Many receive prescription help now; how much of this proposed bill would piggyback that? I am very much afraid it will eventually bankrupt the nation as it has other nations and not neccessarily through people using it, but government waste and corruption. Socialized medicine has been a failure elsewhere so I urge you to demand a complete and public disclosure of what the bill contains and would also plead that NO PORK be allowed in this bill.

Interesting that the corporate media never mentions intergenerational tax equity or fiscal sustainability, issues critical to the future of America's children. We have close to 1 million lawyers in this country and not one can find a term or phrase anywhere in the Constitution or Bill of Rights that protects those who can't vote from punitive taxation.

Go for it, however while I'm looking at the forest instead of the tree's, the bottom line issue is who takes care of the less privileged, the inefficient government bureaucracy forcing funds transfer from the public or non-government charity organization? Us, as Americans are the most generous people in the world and without losing a large portion of our hard earned labor unwillingly through taxes, I think the needy would be taken care of in a much better fashion and with the lack of government confiscation, our economy would sky-rocket.

As you may know, illegal aliens are recieving SS disability and retirement. What you may not know is that TOO many American Citizens having paid into SS for decades are not. I am 55, disabled...told to go on disability by my doctor, yes I have proof. Five years of application to SSA and still no answer. I had to sell my home. I get no medical care. Please read the comments on the following petition by it’s signers. I hope you will explore this travesty. The employees, especially contract ones are milking this system ) while people are dying.

As you may know, illegal aliens are recieving SS disability and retirement. What you may not know is that TOO many American Citizens having paid into SS for decades are not.

That is a down right disgusting scenario to say the least.

I, myself, have worked and paid into SS since I was 14.(a long time) I have never faultered in my input to it for I have been employed since. I have spent years working 15 to 20 hour days on salary which has brought my hourly rate down to $8 an hour with a $65,000/yr job.

If I had my SS input to invest on my own, after I suffered an aortic dissection and survived, I would be retired now. Since I pay 55% of my gross income, through total tax burden, to government annually, I'll be lucky to live long enough to afford the luxury of retirement.

My appologies for my rant, however I wanted to emphasize my empathy for you.

Well, I understand. The rules they've put through for those of us in our age bracket are really something. I paid in nearly 40 years, before medicare even existed. I made a terrible mistake by not filing the day I last worked. I got by on my own resources and didn't file until I felt I had to. As of now, I have NO benefits left. Truck hits me tomoro, or the hands and legs decide they're going to stop working completely and I'm homeless. It is now age 67 to get retirement....the next 12 years ought to be just a riot. You lose disability benefits after just a few years of not paying in. It's going to really surprise all those who took time off to care for ill parents, grandkids, then they get sick and SURPRISE...find out all those years of paying in mean absolutely nothing. Now...after they lose everything, they can get SSI...welfare.

The system is also set up in such an adversarial position, that you must hire an attorney to get benefits. They look at you like your crazy if you haven't.
