ATTACK KILLS SOLDIER
An American soldier has been killed and two wounded in an attack on their convoy near central Baghdad.
The death comes after two US soldiers were killed in a similar attack to the north of Baghdad.
The latest attack came as a convoy carrying soldiers of the First Armoured Division was struck by a roadside bomb.
The soldier was evacuated to a military hospital but died of his wounds.
Earlier, two American soldiers were killed and three wounded in a bomb attack on their convoy to the north of Baghdad.
The US military said the soldiers from Two Task Force Ironhorse were attacked with an "improvised explosive device".
The bombing occured north of the city of Samarra, 110 kms (70 miles) north of Baghdad and near the hometown of ousted president Saddam Hussein.
"The wounded soldiers received immediate medical attention and were transported by helicopter to the 28th Combat Support Hospital," a US military statement said.
"The wounded soldiers are in stable condition.
The deaths raised to 159 the number of US soldiers killed in combat in Iraq since May 1, when major hostilities were declared over.
The attack comes after a US helicopter gunship crew killed seven suspected militants allegedly preparing to fire rockets at a US base in northern Iraq.
"An AH-64 Apache observed enemy forces preparing to attack... trying to fire rockets," said Major Josslyn Aberle.
"The AH-64 engaged the would-be attackers, killing seven and wounding one, while another managed to flee."
She said the would-be assailants had targeted the US army's Speicher base, 125 miles north of Baghdad.
Ground troops were deployed to the area following the incident and are said to have found three destroyed vehicles, a flatbed truck carrying 50 missiles and a bunker containing 300 rockets and between 200 and 300 "unidentified missiles".
