SACRAMENTO (AP) - The Senate's Republican leader predicted Thursday that there will be enough Democratic votes, at least in the his house, to overturn a controversial new law allowing illegal immigrants to get drivers' licenses. But he said a different form of the statute with more security precautions could win support from some GOP lawmakers.

Looks like we may not need a referendum after all.

Obviously this wouldn't be happening if Arnold hadn't been elected governor.

Naturally many people here will not give him any credit for it.

True. But it is still good to get the signatures for the referendum...just in case the Dims in the Assembly are dumb enough to keep the law.

Nice to see the Dims run away from the pet issues now that they know, the party is over for them. Even the person that ended the party is Arnold.

Brulte said some GOP lawmakers might support a new license bill...

None of this is necessary in the first place. Existing law already has provisions to recogize driver licenses from other countries and those drivers can add insurance to policies from their country of origin that will cover them while in the U.S.

This is all about legitimizing illegal border crossers and diminishing the value of citizenship.

AP trying to get the rap audience?

"But it is still good to get the signatures for the referendum..."

===

I agree. Definitely.

But there were people who were bashing Arnold, that he focused on running for governor, for not running around "supporting" the referendum.

He made it clear that he was against the driver's licences for illegals, but that didn't stop some people.

I wouldn't bring that up, in the great new spirit of cooperation and "letting bygones be bygones", but those same people are still attacking Arnold.

I was merely pointing out, that maybe Arnold did know more than they did, that he can influence the CA legislature -- and he did say, that if they don't act, then he will go directly to the people of California.

He (Brulte) said lawmakers need to repeal SB60 by Dec. 5 to head off the possibility of opponents qualifying a referendum for the March ballot to overturn the law.

At first glance a strange expression from a lawmaker who is publically opposed to SB60....until you read this quote in the second reply "Looks like we may not need a referendum after all." from the voice of moderation.

The reason both Brulte and our forum moderates would like the legislature to provide a remedy is because a referndum, passed by the voters, prevents the issue from being visited again by the legislature. Bush's "compassionate" followers won't be able to derail the conservative tempest of the mob.

Jim Brulte is willing to allow illegal aliens to be licensed... as long as there are fig leaves attached to it. No thanks. I'm not interested in a compromise for the sake of appearances. After 9-11 I am absolutely unwilling to compromise on our national security for partisan advantage. Any illegal alien licensing scheme is unacceptable and has go to go.

I believe the Dems will kill the illegals driver license bill when I see it. This would be a big change by the Dems. I do not think it will happen unless there is assurance Arnold will sign a tougher bill. We have to get this on the ballot and kill it once and for all.
