Those who would like 'hard core' RKBA advocates to simply shut up and punch the right button in the voting booth regardless of Constitutional insult, would do well to examine their own principles.

"Bush's Un-doing?"....I dunno about that
His pop signed a law banning imported military look alike semi autos that was sneaked through congress in the middle of a Sunday night...
That wasnt his un-doing
Ahnold holds the uber left wing view of Americans owning firearms..(no one but the elite should privately own weapons)
All conservatives knew this about Arnnie in advance and still voted for him...
I know quite a few gun owners who dont believe that anyone should own "assault rifles" (which the banned arent in the first place) or high capacity handguns..
They will still vote for GW regardless..
One thing for sure there is gonna be some heavy debating...by the "Lying & Bowling for Columbine" crowd...

"The assault weapons ban may be Bush's undoing."

Either that or the stupid open borders policy.....or perhaps the fact that he's spending money we don't have faster than Marion Barry in a DC crack-house.

If the AWB makes it through congress and GWB signs it, I will be the first to vote for hitlery next Nov. We might as well get this Civil War II started while my generation can still pull a trigger and remember why we are pulling it. The next generation is lost to the "me first" idea and could care less about their rights. None of my adult children enjoy the shooting sports nor hunt.

I have already nearly bolted from the Bush barn, and am considering voting against him on other grounds (lack of commitment to conservative priciples). If the assault weapon ban makes it to his desk and he signs it my vote is gone for good.

As my dad said, "when I vote for a Republican I don't want them to get in there and pander to the Democrats, I want them to kick ass!!"

I hope Mr. Bush would re-consider. I will pray that he will uphold the constitution and allow no restriction on firearms for law abiding people.

Also we need to talk about as a nation a way for those who have transgressed the law to have their rights restored if they have proven that they can live clean.

coming soon is the day when an executive order declares that the second amendment is an amendment of terrorists, leaning to overthrow the legitimate government through illegitimate means.

after all, that is what the second amendment is all about, not hunting. the patriot act and anti-terrorism laws will make the second amendment, unnecessary and cement it as an assault on legitimate governance.

there are many who view the government as their bread and butter. free men are to be feared and exterminated...

good luck to all

The AWB is the line in the sand. If the gun-banning incrementalism doesn't stop when "conservatives" control the House, Senate, and White House, then it isn't going to stop until WE stop it.

Bush did the thing that was not so popular in the media and went back to war with Iraq. He said that it needed doing, and he wasn't going to wait when he knew it was the right thing to do. I think he'll take the same approach on the AWB if it reaches his desk. Veto it and let the lawmakers override it in a super-majority. A 51/49% split on a law that important and opposed by your political allies, it would be political suicide for him to sign it. Let congress take the blame if it passes. He's not getting votes from many supporters of that bill anyway, so he shouldn't care what they think. Just my 2 cents.

Helluva predicament...not really sure where I stand on this...I oppose the AWB, but I know that if I abstain from voting than it might not just be AW that are banned...something to ponder and pray about.

I saw Fred Barnes on the Special Report panel a couple weeks ago briefly mention the (so-called) AWB, and he seemed to think it was a "fringe" issue that would have absolutely no brearing on the upcoming election.

The original made it through a Dem controlled House, the renewal will never make it past Tom Delay.

The overreaching Dems will never go along with renewing the present one anyway, which gets Bush off the hook. The Dems want to right a super-duper AWB.

I think the Instant Check system is a good thing.

Bans on black rifles and shotguns is ludicrous.

I think it's very important to keep the heat on wobbly Republicans and gun friendly Dems, but all is not lost.

(Can't wait to stock up on cheap highcaps.)

The nerve of someone who supports an assault weapons ban.

I mean, how does anyone expect me to protect myself and my family only with the other 97 handguns, rifles and shotguns I already own.

Come to think of it, I need a bazooka, too.

Can't be too careful, you know.

(Meanwhile, back to reality)

Please, forgive the sarcasm, and please don't flame me.

But every time I read comments like the above in which people demand unlimited assault guns "or they will not vote for Bush," I just want to wretch.

If I can't protect myself and my family with the umpteen guns I already have, then there's something radically wrong with my aim ---- and an assault weapon ain't gonna help. (it certainly won't deter an attacker any more than if they know I am armed to the teeth with my other rifles and guns.)

I wholeheartedly support the Second Amendment, but that still does not eliminate the fact that some people (yes there are unstable kooks out there) who simply should not be able to get their hands on an assault rifle.

Go ahead. Lemme have it.

Good commentary.

During his 2000 campaign, candidate Bush voiced his support of the assault weapons ban that was passed during the Clinton administration. The federal law is scheduled to expire on Sept. 13, 2004, and Bush, speaking as president, has already stated that he supports its reauthorization.

Do you have the exact quotes from President Bush (the earlier statement from President Bush would be nice, too)?

The left knows the ban is a deal breaker for most people. Thus since the left can't actually get it passed, they will publicise as much possible the fact that Bush said he supports it and would sign it, IF it reached his desk.

Lets see, according to your profile you left the Democrat Party ten years ago over RKBA. Now, you're going to leave the GOP over the same issue.

Who the hell needs, or wants, you?
