FORT SAM HOUSTON, Texas (AP) --Jose Martinez was known as an open and friendly guy before he joined the Army a year ago.

Months after he was trapped for 20 minutes in a fiery ammunition truck in Iraq and suffered disfiguring burns on his face, head, arms and legs, the 20-year-old from Dalton, Georgia, is using those qualities to comfort fellow burn victims.

Martinez's courageous attitude urged nurses to ask him to volunteer in the burn ward.

God bless our wounded and disfigured one and all for having given so much for their country. May we always live up to our commitment as a nation and people to give them the full care and support they have earned and deserve for the remainder of their lives.

Jose Martinez reminds me there is one thing that cannot be disputed when it comes to the diversity of ethnic groups. The Hispanics are first and foremost when it comes to duty, honor and country in America. They are the most decorated ethnic group for bravery in the military and have been for generations. I have a most tremendous heartfelt respect for them.

Not to take anything away from Hispanics and this brave young man, but that's wrong and incorrect.

My brother, who is a LT with the 101st Airborne said this a year ago-that the hispanic soldiers make the best soldiers as far as he is concerned-and my brother is an American of Irish decent so no bias there.
