For many GIs, Iraq appears to be a strictly BYOB war Bring Your Own Bulletproofs.
Suzanne Werfelman is a mother and a teacher who has been shopping for individual body armor. This is not in response to threats from her elementary-class students in Sciota, Pa.; it's a desperate attempt to protect her son in Iraq.
Like many other U.S. service members in Iraq, her son was given a Vietnam-era flak jacket that cannot stop the type of weapons used today. It appears that parents across the country are now purchasers of body armor because of the failure of the military to supply soldiers with modern vests.

"Its time we all write our Senator and demand they buy the best for our guys. They deserve to have the armor they deserve."
I agree! With all the waste in government - it's time to get our priorities straight.

Roger that - I've been a proponent of Israel doing the exact same thing for years. It will either get the locals to fix the problem or end up with no one left to commit the terror acts; either way, problem solved.
You bet... I've been saying all along. For every American killed, we wipe out one Muslim country. Eventually, they'll start behaving like human beings or we'll get rid of the problem. After 9/11 though, we wouldn't be having this problem at this late date... ~3000 dead would have given us the blank check to take care of this issue.

"Funny you should mention the congress critters, they are trying to ban non-civillian ownership of body armor...nice guys aren't they."
We have some real idiots serving in the government. It's time that we give them the same scrutiny that they are demanding of the judges that are being fillibustered now.

"Great question. It seems that the Congress is more concerned with their safety, comfort, and financial well being than they are about that of our troops or disabled veterans."
That seems to happen once they are elected. It's not only the troops and disabled veterans. They no longer represent the will of the people who hire them.

I'd be AWOL in about five minutes. It's a long walk home from Mosul.

It probably wouldn't do any good, but did you contact your congressman about this lack of gear for your sons?
Yes I did. They were getting a lot of calls from families during the great debate in congress for Iraqi funds. I don't think the nine dwarfs realize how many military votes they lost while debating approval for our military budget.

I've got connections in Turkey that might come in handy.

Do you actually have 3 sons in the military?
To: xsrdx
very good article...
Too bad the vests weren't issued before we went into Iraq.

Do you actually have 3 sons in the military?
Yes I do. Two are in the Army and one is in the Corp.

God bless you and your sons.

We dont need to give them these vests, no way we should instead spend the money on illegal alien benefits here. I mean why give to the men and women fighting and dieing for us, it would be much better to spend it on the illegals who come across the border and steal our cars, rape our women, and sell their drugs. These are the real heros in our society - to hell with armed forces, screw them and give it all to the illegals who hate us anyway. Lets get a petition going to send to Congress - I bet we could get at least 1-2 million signatures. Welcome to bizarro world - where right is wrong and wrong is right.

I've got connections in Turkey that might come in handy. When crossing the border, don't dress like a Kurd!

God bless you and your sons.
Thanks, I will pass the word along.

You are so right and so many Americans just keep voting them in again anyway. It's sad.
I can tell, though, from your posts you are not part of the problem. You are, and will be part of the solution. Thanks.
