November 13, 2003 -- Heart-attack cases skyrocketed at one Brooklyn hospital after the 9/11 attacks, which supports the idea that psychological stress can be a trigger, doctors reported yesterday.

Several studies have shown that stress of various kinds can increase the risk of a heart attack, but the Brooklyn study shows a direct link between a traumatic event and heart attacks in a large population.

Hmmmm, sounds about right given the trauma of that day. I would have expected to see some increase. It was quite a shock to me and I wasn't even close. I would also think that there was a corresponding increase country wide.

I wonder if this means that we are as a people too fragile???

I don't know if it means we're too fragile, but I do believe that the occasional chest pains/twinges I have may be related to that.

I can well believe this. I was in my apartment a few blocks from the WTC on 9/11. The second plane flew past my window about a hundred feet away (there was a picture of it in the next day's NY Times showing my window), and I could see the plane-shaped burning holes in the towers after I left my building. I didn't realize how much shock my system sustained until later. It took several months to get over it. I seemed calm at the time, and acted rationally, partly because I've been through some emergency situations before at sea, but it hits you at an unconscious level and take it out of your system. I still feel some of it when I walk by Ground Zero, as well as sorrow for the dead heroes.

Yikes! We were practically neighbors -- although I'm a little to the east of there.

I know what you mean about the shock hitting you a little later. It still hits me, and I don't know if I'll ever get over it. I, too, sometimes wonder how I made it through all that without losing my mind -- and my life.

It means that there were a HELL of a lot of people nearby with bad hearts. Which is not surprising considering our enemies hit us in the very heart of our largest city.

Reminds me of
