It would seem to me if he was concerned something got loose and floated ashore he would have been out scanning the shores for a long ways as there is no possible way he could know exactly where anything might float ashore.
So I really don't think so. I think he was just drawn to her place of burial.

It appears SP was getting a tad nervous, re. returning to the bay on Jan. 5, 6 and 9 ... from a timeline ...
Jan. 2: Divers looked for Laci's body and then ruled out future searches at the Berkeley Marina.
Jan. 8: Divers returned to the Berkeley Marina.
Jan. 9: Sonar equipment detected an object in the water and investigators admitted it could be a human body.
Jan. 10: Dive search teams recover submerged anchor, not human body from water at Berkeley Marina.
