"The Universal National Service Act of 2003 "amends the Military Selective Service Act to authorize the military registration of females" and declares "that it is the obligation of every U.S. citizen, and every other person residing in the United States, between the ages of 18 and 26 to perform a two-year period of national service"

Gaining of constitutional knowledge? That's kind of funny considering how very clear they make it that once you're in the military, the Constitution no longer applies to you.

Lest we forgot what happened in the last Presidential where Gore's lawyers was able to throw out ALL the military abbesitee ballots in FL.

I see the democratic logic in this, draft all the young conservatives, send them to die in the most hellish places on Earth, stripping them of the right to free speech, to right to vote, the right to their pursuit of happiness (their future), taxing them to the point of bankrupcy, while at the same time, giving illegal immigrants free health care, free walfare and the right to vote democratic.

As the U.S. where being a citizen means being second class to everyone else.

Personally, I think a revolt will happen probably in 2 to 8 years, depends on who wins next year's presidential election.

In see nothing wrong with a draft/service obligation [with absolutely no deferments] for say a term of one year with a 'no combat clause'..
Call it a citizens duty, a 'rite of passage', -- whatever... But this country needs people 'indoctrinated' in constitutional knowledge and self defense.

You take an oath to protect and defend our constitution, not that "the Constitution no longer applies to you".

But, there was no "draft", as we commonly refer to it, before before 1948 and it ended in 1973.

There are half a million dead Civil War Soldiers and several million from WWI and WWII who would take issue with your point.

No, I don't believe those people were drafted... Directly from the Selective Services Website:

"For more than 50 years, Selective Service and the registration requirement for America's young men have served as a backup system to provide manpower to the U.S. Armed Forces.

President Franklin Roosevelt signed the Selective Training and Service Act of 1940 which created the country's first peacetime draft and formally established the Selective Service System as an independent Federal agency.

From 1948 until 1973, during both peacetime and periods of conflict, men were drafted to fill vacancies in the armed forces which could not be filled through voluntary means.

In 1973, the draft ended and the U.S. converted to an All-Volunteer military.

I didn't serve -- but I would have done so proudly if called upon by my country. And I reckon I'd have been a "better man" about it than many of you wusses on this thread. I sure as hell wouldn't have whined and wimpered about it.
