AL-Qaeda terrorists using the cover of anti-war protests were a real threat to US President George W Bush's safety during his London visit next week, Britain's most senior policemen have reportedly warned.
"We are not so concerned about some anti-war protester throwing rotten fruit at the President. Our worry now is the more dangerous elements who may be here," a senior Scotland Yard source told The Times newspaper.
The report came a day after anti-war demonstrators accused the Government of blocking their right to protest in central London against Bush's visit from November 18 to 21.
The Stop the War Coalition, the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND), and the Muslim Association of Great Britain intend to organise a 100,000-strong march on November 20 around the main government buildings.
But, according to Stop The War coalition, police have said any demonstration through Parliament Square and Whitehall in the heart of the capital would be banned.
"It is an outrage that the most unwelcome guest this country has ever received will be given the freedom of the streets, while a movement that represents majority opinion is denied the right to protest in the area which is the heart of government," Stop the War Coalition convenor Lindsey German said.
"The police claim that the ban is to do with the sessional order that prevents demonstrations when Parliament is sitting.
"But previous demonstrations have gone along this route when Parliament is in session."
White House planners have reportedly pressed British authorities to virtually shut down most of central London in a big security operation during Bush's visit.
A Scotland Yard source quoted today in The Times described the original demands made by the US Secret Service as "totally unacceptable".
"They wanted to turn London into little Washington by closing roads for miles around, hours before the President's motorcade passes, and that is just not acceptable here," the unnamed source said.
Last February, an estimated one million people marched through London in the run-up to the US-led invasion of Iraq, in one of the biggest street protests seen in the capital.
Bush will stay with the Queen as her guest at Buckingham Palace.
He will also have talks with Prime Minister Tony Blair, his staunchest ally in the war in Iraq.
A clear majority of British voters think Bush was wrong on Iraq, according to a poll published yesterday.
A majority of 60 per cent disapproved of the way Bush had dealt with Iraq, compared with the 20 per cent who backed his actions.
Almost half of all those asked, 49 per cent, thought military action in Iraq was wrong compared with 24 per cent polled back in April.
Al Quata, communist peace protestors, what's the difference? They're probably working together as a hit team.
Cover your hind end, Mr. President! America is with you, sir.
Lefties are still stuck at the bottom of Maslow's Hierarchy . They haven't even stopped nursing off the U.S. taxpayers yet.
Yep. One big anti-American terrorist organization.
Can you imagine our president having to go within miles of a bunch of rabid, unwashed, diseasd, drugged out lunitics like these? It would be like visiting the worlds largest homocidial insane asylum.
It would be like one angel facing a mulitude of vemomous demons knowing their time is up.
At least he's a rightous man, and has the big guy on his side.
Watch out for Prince Charles!
That drunk guy got paid big bucks to say that. I wonder if the gay lobby pitched in a few sheckles. "See Christ AND the prince are just like us!"
So it is.
Amen.
The hatred in these people is amazing. Isn't this hate speech GR? Astounding.
Just show a picture of VP Cheney, with a nice caption. "Without W holding him in check, this man will Nuke North Korea"
The intelligence of Mr. Cheney drives the left bonkers, because he is quick witted, a thinker, KNOWS his crap, and can pound some mamby pamby liberal lefty socialist into the ground with reasoned, solid logical arguments. He doesn't resort to ad hominem attacks. He doesn't get mad. He's just right.
WRONG! The majority are those normal people who'll stay home and have a life!!
"100,000,000,000,000,000 people did not attend the communist peace protest today."
