WASHINGTON (AP) -- Democrat John Kerry's press secretary and deputy finance director quit Tuesday amid chaos on a presidential campaign staff that lost its manager a day earlier.

Robert Gibbs, chief spokesman for the Massachusetts lawmaker, quit to protest the firing of campaign manager Jim Jordan, let go by Kerry Sunday night.

NY Times
Mr. Jordan left Mr. Kerry's home after what was described by campaign officials as a tense confrontation and flew back to Washington. There, he headed to Mr. Kerry's campaign headquarters for an emotional farewell where, over beer and tears, he urged Kerry aides who were threatening to follow Mr. Jordan out the door to stay on and help Mr. Kerry win the White House.

Mr. Kerry held a 45-minute telephone conference call on Sunday to discuss the firing with aides, many of whom had been hired by Mr. Jordan and who were described by participants in the meeting as distraught and unsettled by this latest instance of turmoil in the Kerry campaign. Rather than calming the waters, three people who took part in the call said, Mr. Kerry was pummeled for nearly an hour by campaign aides who asked if Mr. Jordan was becoming a scapegoat for the candidate's shortcomings.

The AP reported last night that Kerry was heard eating while he was informing them of Jordan's dismissal, and he also mispronounced a senior staffer's name. Several aides told the AP that they were "stung by his attitude" and considering quitting.

He has worked both sides of the street, antiwar in the late '60's and early '70's when that was a vote-getter, then flip-flopped as soon as he thought he could get more votes by emphasizing his service. I have nothing but contempt for him -- he went overboard with the nauseating VVAW and I have never forgiven him for that. In my book he gets +10 points for Vietnam service, -10,000 for VVAW participation, -10,000 for hypocrisy, etc.
Couldn't happen to a nicer, more hypocritical guy.

How typical of the power-mongering.

You got it. At the start of the campaign, it looked like Kerry was going to be the front-runner. Therefore, you had a lot of front-runner types glomming onto his campaign. Now that it appears that Kerry hasn't got a snowball's chance in hell, they are quickly seeking other opportunities before it is too late. Kerry doesn't have the charisma to build loyalty and hold together staffers. He's as lively as a dead fish. Hell, Mike Dukakis exuded more charisma than this guy.

The only question remaining is whether he withdraws from the race before or after Al Sharpton passes him in the polls.

Some people have no class, no matter how many Ivy League schools they attend.

Is this the same John Kerry who's a Vietnam Vet who served in Vietnam, but threw his his medals away while protesting the Vietnam War after he served in Vietnam?

Kerry's a Viet Nam vet? I'll bet not too many people know about that. He should probably mention it on the campaign trail from time to time.
