It's a huge issue in the Finger Lakes area. The Canandaigua VA is a major employer of citizens from many cities and towns, and the loss of jobs coupled with loss of service to veterans doesn't help the local perception of the Bush administration. The VA complex does appear to be underused. There is a process underway to assess the care options for the local veterans, and to creatively and cost-effectively use the unneeded space at the VA. Anyone who thinks a suitable solution for the local vets is to be bussed to Buffalo or Syracuse for their day programs (which was the assumption), needs to get off what they're smoking and brush up on their map skills. I would hope that our state elected officials would put this matter under serious review. I'm just sorry those officials are Hillary and Chuckie.

You don't need to keep an entire hospital open to provide day programs to veterans. How about an outpatient facility? As to the jobs lost....I thought that most people on FR were against government handouts and jobs programs. A job for the sake of a job and not one that was really needed provided at government (say taxpayer) expense. If this was a for profit civilian hospital would be still be open? Not looking at the revenue, but at the occupancy rate? If the answer is that it would be closed then it needs to go.
