[With the Flip of a Coin] Heads, Elliot wins

HARRISON, Idaho _ With the flip of a quarter and the call of heads, Barbara Elliot became the next mayor Monday night. Elliot and opponent Ray Unger tied with 50 votes each in the Nov. 4 election.

The coin toss was planned to settle the election during last Wednesday's Council meeting, but there weren't enough council members for a quorum.

Coin tosses have been used twice before to settle elections in this small town south of Coeur d'Alene. That's how current Mayor David LePard got the job eight years ago, said maintenance worker Jim Shepard, who just happened to be near the phone at City Hall Monday night when a reporter called for the results of the toss.

"Some don't think (a coin toss) is very democratic," Shepard said. "But that's the way the state has it set up, I guess."

Coeur d'Alenen & David LePard sounds frog to me.
