Here is the deal. At some point in this country, it was decided that a governor, Senator, etc. was elected to serve ONLY the party that elected him/her. They are not to care a whit about the citizen's who have a different political party after their name.

No matter how many liberal Democrats Arnold appoints to his administration, he will never raise taxes. Arnold is a stand-up guy and a man of his word and he would have to be a lying scumbag to even think about raising taxes. But he won't raise taxes, not in a million years. And that's the bottom line.

For example, spending ... which creates the PRESSURE to raise taxes or the POSSIBILITY to lower them. Or not.

THANK GOD Schwarzenegger WASN'T born here. At least we don't have to worry about him running for President. At least we don't now, but that idiot Orrin Hatch was talking about amending the Constitution to allow foreign born people to run for President, precisely for Schwarzenegger's benefit.

OK, from someone (me) who was pointing out throughout the campaign that Arnold had declared he was *NOT* a Republican, I have to say this:

Dick Riordan, former mayor of Los Angeles, while very liberal on many issues, would be a secretary of education who would make me very happy as a conservative. When all the establishment politicians, including those beloved by the right wing (Lundgren, Bush, Cox, Hunter, etc.) were running away from Prop 227, Riordan boldly supported, and was a key figure in getting it passed. I understand he also supported the reintroduction of phonics-based reading. These two reforms will be so beneficial to education that they simply overwhelm any other educational issues.

Of course this is why the Teacher's Union people couldn't stand Riordan. He's a fine appointment.

I have to say I think the article's a little over the top. Arnold's top priority is to fix the state's economy and formulate a budget that works for everyone, and in that task he did not compromise. His new budget director is top-drawer, the Reason Foundation is involved, the Jarvis people are, and so on.

I don't know about environmental terms, because it's not my speciality. I'm sure Carry Okie will drop by and remind us what a disasterous environmental appointee he has. I think appointing a dedicated environmentalist to head the EPA was probably a winning political strategy. This does not mean it was a good idea, just that it will play well politically.

Let's hope he gives the Reason Foundation people a seat at the environmental table, and then I think many of Carry Okie's concerns will be represented.

Personally, I think a lot of us are underestimating Arnold. I'm impressed by him so far; let's see what he does once in power.

You mean like he tried last January, which was so unreasonable that it sparked the recall? I see. Hmmmmm the difference is like a couple FReepers on here brought up, the GOP held strong out against the "D" tax increases, they won't against any "R" ones.

"Playing well" is an ephemeral political consideration when it comes to the long term effects of coddling environmental thugs. When the hangover hits and the chicken plop runs down your face, it doesn't look so good.

Consider the political effect of giving every University of California student free tuition. That is what the disastrous changeover to plastic fuel tanks cost us. MTBE cost us even more, because we'll have to do that changeover again.

You might want to give the following two posts a read: this and this.

IMHO, you can't separate the politics or the environment from economics. Environmental regulation has a far more powerful effect upon the economy than I think you yet appreciate.

Actually, I have heard both good and bad on that group. From what I have seen of Arnold's choices and his associations, my concerns are more likely to be realized.

Kind of scarey when Talk Radio has a bias how quickly they sell out on issues that matter to the people. I remember everyone agreed that the car tax was unjust & should be repealed, even the Green, but now that is in danger of not happening, and the local (R)nold shills are strangely silent about this outrage.

Schwarzenegger is considering Terry Tamminen, a Santa Monica environmental activist lauded by Democrats and fellow environmentalists, as the new head of California's Environmental Protection Agency, which enforces air- and water- quality rules.
