Imagine a frightening world, where all information comes from one source. The people, little more than gray mice, are fed kernels of "truth" which have been processed through a network of like-minded disseminators. Facts become facts based on the will of the source, and the acceptance by the gray mice. And that acceptance is a given.
Welcome to the world we used to live in, and all of us were initially indoctrinated to passively accept. Accept the word of the disseminators. They know, we don't; They emit, we absorb. Likeminded filters of reality, providing validity to the perceptions of the elite and the orthodox. Vast assembly lines, the great universities, long ago compromised by an infestation of the likeminded, turning out more disseminators, and more and more, until the line between the elites and the disseminators all has but disappeared. The evolution of a self- sufficient class of elitists, whose goal was to promulgate the will of the source, proselytizing as they go, eager to themselves become or even surpass the source.
It was in this world that the recent miniseries "The Reagans" was born. The disseminator (in this case, the CBS television network) would do the devil's work by presenting fiction as fact. The elite would be pleased, and the gray mice would see what Ronald and Nancy Reagan were really like. The gray mice would be repelled by the cruelty and indifference of the evil Reagan, a backward tight-assed religious fanatic, and his shrewish wife, the shrill backstabbing Nancy. The elite would tighten their grip on the gray mice who had been deceived into electing this horrid and stupid man. History would be revised... Fiction would be fact...
Imagine a frightening world, where all perception is uniform, all interpretation the same shade of red, all nuances removed, all leaders born to and nurtured by the elite. And the gray mice fed the lies the elite dictate. Imagine the frightening world we used to live in.
But something changed along the way. The monopoly of information distribution, long held by the disseminators, was challenged by new entity, a thing called TalkRadio, where the likeminded were rebuked, the elitists trashed. And then by a new network, where the views of the elite were not parrotted, where the gray mice actually stood up and spoke; and then by a new form of television, where the gray mice could observe their representatives at work, and actually involve themselves in decision making; and then, the nightmare of nightmares for the elite: that new technology called the Internet. Too big to monopolize. To vast to control. Now the gray mice had a platform. Now they could talk to anyone and everyone. Now they could challenge the elite with research, cross-referencing, or just plain ranting.
In this world, the miniseries "The Reagans" was held up to the scrutiny of the gray mice. It did not pass the test for truthfulness. Whether it was broadcast as originally planned or not became irrelevant. The word was out. The elitists were at it again, and they had been exposed, and they had been rejected. They looked with shock and they looked with dismay, as they saw what they hoped they would never see. Those gray mice weren't gray anymore. And they weren't mice.
Imagine a wonderful world, where information is available to us all, and freedom thrives under the spotlight of knowledge. Imagination not necessary, Truth-ites. We are living in that world today.
We already have it with ABCCBSNBCCNNNPR=DNC
But not too vast that it can't be taxed. And the power to tax is the power to destroy...
(Just playing the devil's advocate as far as I could...)
Talk radio IS NOT NEW!!!
Imagine the world the author describes?! I lived it. Well, almost. You had to look hard sometimes to get the "rest of the story" -- or, for that matter, just to get the story -- during the dark age of the FCC "Fairness Doctrine."
You can fool some of the people all of the time, all of the people some of the time, but to fool all of the people (almost) all of the time you need a 'Fairness Doctrine."
Talk radio was not invented by this generation. President Reagan freed it from prison in 1987. It did more than twenty years behind bars placed there by liberals' complaints against conservative opinion. Station owners dropped discussion fearing for their licenses.
