Jews sue U.S. over World War II plunder
Chicago Tribune ^ | November 9, 2003 | Ron Grossman

Posted on 11/09/2003 11:08:01 AM PST by Symblized

Six decades later, Veronika Baum is rendered almost speechless with rage by recounting what happened during the final days of World War II.

"How could they do such a thing?" said Baum, 72, who lives on New York's Upper West Side.

Born into a well-to-do Budapest family, she saw her parents sent to concentration camps and their property confiscated, like that of other Jews, by Hitler's Hungarian allies. Now she has gone to court seeking compensation in one of a series of lawsuits filed in recent years by Holocaust survivors. But Baum's case is different; she isn't suing the Germans or Hungarians.

She is going after the U.S. government.

Baum and her fellow plaintiffs allege that what the Hungarian fascists stole from them subsequently was plundered by American troops. Their lawyers say it was an episode of looting on a massive scale that was hushed up at the time and that Washington has tried to keep a lid on ever since.

Well, I'm willing to ante up to reimburse her as soon as she pays us back for saving her ungrateful asterisk.

Well, you should not post stories on here that you are only able to do as an excerpt when the source requires you to have a membership in order to read the full version. Otherwise it is pointless to those of us who do not subscribe.

I believe that the chicagotribune.com is a site which we cannot post full articles from.

Yeah, I understand about not being able to post articles from certain sites. However, it is counterproductive to the forumn if only the poster has a membership at such sites. Meaning, that we are only able to see the excerpted article while only the poster is able to read the article in it's entirety. Whats the point of posting an article if the other members click on the "excerpted" link, only to find that the source site requires a membership?

Nobody is twisting your arm forcing you to click on the link. Likewise, no one is prohibiting you from signing up to view articles. If you have a problem with excepts being posted from these sites then wait and see if the owners' agents respond to your complaint.

I can say with absolute certainty that this is an ill-timed lawsuit. I think this will go over badly with most Americans. The plantiffs should stand down and realize that such a lawsuit would be more detrimental than goood.

...and then ask her if she still thinks suing us is proper.

There you go making sense again.

The only thing this pathetic, ungrateful person and her pathetic, greedy lawyer will get out of this is assorted bills for for court costs, filing fees, etc., which she will have to pay up front.

She will not get one penny from the Government for this fraud.

You totally miss the point, but I can see that you just like to argue so I will not waste any further time with you past this post.

Dr., subscription to the Tribune website is free. All you have to do is register with them, and you'll be able to see the full article. It costs nothing other than like 3 minutes. Beyond that, I'm not sure if any Freeper has set up a registration for all Freepers so that you can view the site without registering yourself (or even if Free Republic does such things).

Thanks. I wasn't trying to be a jerk about it. Just trying to make a point.
