John Loftus now on Batchelor Alexander WABC reports: A student of Nuclear Engineering at McMaster University Hamilton, Ontario. has disappeared along with 180 pounds of nuclear waste stolen from the university's nuclear reactor. This happened several months ago but an alert has been ordered tonight in the USA and Canada. His name is ? Adnan al-ShoukriJumai, 27 years old, a Saudi national. A search is underway. The fear is that they may hijack a cargo plane in Canada. I hope to provide further details later on this thread.

Never trust Canada or France. They owe it all to us, but rarely ever repay the gratitude.

Are there any science-type FReepers out there who know what 180 lbs of nuke material can do?

Just for you whiney boy:
One for Meccah...

Waste cannot cause a fissionable explosion. But if it is wrapped around a stick of TNT it can make life interesting for anyone who wanders into the blast radius AFTER detonation. A portion of the nuke material is vaporized and in this form can be inhaled.
THAT is part of the problem with a "dirty" nuke.
I am skeptical of the story, but, it IS credible on its face. Too bad you're not.

PC liberalism could get us all killed.
Canada appears to have no security to speak of.

Is this guy the 20th hijacker??
http://www.intellnet.org/news/2003/03/27/18701-1.html The official also says there is specific information linking El Shukrijumah to captured al-Qaeda operative Ramzi Bin al-Shibh, a key source of financing in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Investigators believe El Shukrijumah was in the United States in the weeks before the Sept. 11 attacks. But there is no evidence linking him to the assaults on the World Trade Center and Pentagon (news - web sites), officials say.

I'm not the brightest bulb in the fixture, but at the very LEAST it would make folks very ill, and cause long term health effects, not unlike a small Chernoble(sp?)

I've long thought it would be better to irradiate Mecca rather and physically destroying it. A cobalt-jacketed bomb exploded in the right way would do.
Then fanatical Moslems would reduce their own numbers by making stupid attempts to visit the dead zone.

http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/WarOnTerrorism/2003/03/20/47313-ap.html A senior law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the FBI believes the 27-year-old Saudi received flight training, possibly in Florida. A second senior source said El Shukrijumah possessed a Florida driver's licence. Officials said El Shukrijumah's organizing capabilities are comparable to those of Mohammed Atta, the suspected organizer of the Sept. 11 terror attacks. Fifteen of the 19 hijackers were Saudis and some, including Atta, received flight training in Florida.

Just because a Canadian University denies something is no reason to disbelieve the story.
If this were true, they'd want to keep it from the public. As a Canadian academic, I am shocked, shocked by the suggestion
that a Canadian university would organize a coverup.

I used to date a nuclear engineering student. You'd be amazed what these students have access to.

No he will not hijack a plane. Look for this nuclear waste to show up in a dirty bomb in Los Angeles, New York and Washington D.C. There was a Nuclear Fatwa issued against the U.S. back in September, 2003.
