It is a cassette tape that Diana kept in a special mahogany box — along with other things like her divorce papers and a signet ring from one of her lovers — and that came into Mr. Burrell's possession after her death.
On the tape, according to news reports, George Smith, a former royal valet, accuses an unnamed male courtier of raping him and, even more explosively, says he saw a senior member of the royal family and a royal servant engaged in a compromising sexual act.
Irritatingly, no one seems to know where the tape is now; Mr. Burrell has said it got lost somewhere. But Mr. Smith himself said last week that publicly revealing his allegations would have "terrible consequences," while Mr. Burrell spoke darkly about the tape's "very personal and very damaging" contents, making it clear that he knows exactly who is alleged to have done what to whom, and when.
Meanwhile, The Daily Mail reported that members of the royal family were plunging "ever more deeply into paranoia" as they wondered "whether one of their circle is going to be named as gay."
Didn't the Queen quickly drop the suit against Diana's butler when it became clear that he would reveal certain information?
