Not Another Vietnam (more reasons)...

Won't work Dems. Keep trying. Now that the economy is unmistakably recovering, your only hope left is to paint Operation Iraqi Freedom as Vietnam Redux - because Vietnam is considered a classic failure and you so desperately want the president to fail. There have been many posts here about why this comparison is flawed. I have more reasons but also why the strategy itself will fail. Maybe already has.

You have to hope the president fails and by extension that America fails. You will have to campaign and preach this. You have to motivate folks out there to work hard to accomplish this. but

In the 60's/70's it took YEARS to develop the national psychosis that framed America's efforts in Vietnam as "evil" and that our troops were "babykillers", to be spat at on return from the Quagmire. Our leaders were framed as disconnected hypocrits for not realizing the the "majority" of american citizens felt that Vietnam's communist struggle against us was noble and that we were the problem. This "majority" was limited to professors, media, left-wing wackos, soontobe draftees, etc. but it seems like a lot of folks were rooting for the enemy.

This is the first place where the Vietnam II analogy cracks, irreparably. Who is rooting for the Baathists? Who wants Saddam back (I mean, here in the U.S., not including the French, Germans, and other Weasels who profited from his UN sanctions and corrupt deals). What American voting block - hispanics, blacks, wasps, mormans, gays, union members, illegal immigrants - seriously hopes deep down that America will be eventually defeated in Iraq and that the last of our troops will be evacuated in disgrace from the roof of the Al-Rashid hotel as the cheering Baathist Nazi's (or Shiite Fundamentalists, or Al-Qaeda IslamoFascists) crowds shout their victory cries.

Yes, there are certainly people around the world who smile when they read reports about an american chopper downing or are heartened seeing america "get a black eye". Maybe even the majority of the world from Beijing to all the arab hypocrit sheikhdoms, to Venezuela to Pretoria. But no american really feels that way. Even democrats.

To create an illusion that the bad guys in the Sunni Triangle are really the Good Guys to the American voters would not be impossible but it ain't gonna happen, Dems. And short of this, the reality is we are there and are committed to winning. And Americans are rooting for OUR GUYS (and women) to win.

If the bad guys win over there, our citizens know we will not return to our tea like the English in the 1800's, or to our bongs like in the 1970's. They know it will be a battle call for the whole stinking ignorant jihad mob to attack us at home and abroad. No, this conflict is no "brushfire war" between proxies, it is an Orkin-like strike into the middle of the rats' nest to prevent the next Black Plague.

No U.S. soldier will ever be spat at on return from Iraq or Afghanistan. Iraq will never be Vietnam.

I question how committed the Admin. really is to winning anymore and how committed they are to getting out (or almost out) by Election day. I would like to see how that is spun among the Bushbots if that is what happens. There is no way Iraq can rule itself at this point. We could leave one very large and far more dangerous mess than we found.

I hope you are wrong but history so far has shown that W does what he says, however uneloquently. And he says we are committed to finishing the job.
