Find me a moral Liberal. You can't.

I'm not sure I want to start this, but I disagree. Most of us on FR have a pretty similar view of what morality is, but I have an ultra-liberal friend who engages in lots questionable sexual practices, abortion-loving, total atheist, but I would number him among one of the more moral people that I know.

Why? Because he has his set of beliefs, and follows them very strictly. He does not lie, he is good to people, he is a hard worker, he never wants to hurt anyone, I mean, a really good guy. He was raised in a completely atheist household, and so the beliefs he came out with are different.

I just looked it up: mor-al, adj. 1. of, pertaining to, or concerned with right conduct or its principles. 2. being in accordance with such principles.

(I am so going to get flamed for this...)

The assumption we are all making here is that OUR beliefs are the RIGHT ones. I'm just pointing out that somebody who has a different frame of reference for their belief system can still be a moral person.

Well, I'm not going to argue with you (really! I swear!)

I will say that when I was in college I knew a Deadhead, who was always well-stoned. He (in turn) knew some Hells Angels. And he claimed that THEY were the most moral people he knew. They had a code that they lived by, and they were very rigorous about sticking to that code. Hence, they were moral people.

Just 'cause someone has a code, doesn't mean they are moral. It just means they have a code. For me (your mileage may vary) all moral codes which come from Man are arbitrary and equal. Marry your sister? Egyptians thought it was cool. Kill the Jews? The Nazis thought it was right. Tell the truth? Sounds great!

I say that morality comes from God. Other people may have their own code and those codes could be good or they could be bad. But there is no way to "judge" them if they all come from Men who are equally fallible. Who is to say the Nazi's were wrong?
My answer: God.
Other people's answer: I read it in a book.

If someone is a good person, yet feels strongly that their own moral code allows abortion, then I say they are deluding themselves and do not have a real moral code, just a list of things that they approve of.

Your reply is what confuses me about myself. I do not believe anyone has a good reason to be on well fare. I also do not believe homosexuality is something that you are born with and therefore I do not believe in gay marriages. I am not necessarily against abortion and the only reason is because no one going to be able to stop anyone from having sex out of weddlock. So then what happens they have 2 3 or 9 kids and then we end up having to pay for their mistakes. Those kids end up in the public school system and end up starting the cycle all over again. I am a very hard worker and I have never asked for anything from my parents. I am a christian and do my best to live by the 10 commandments. I am also just a man and according to the bible a sinner. How can we cast judgement on anyone else when we are all sinners. And is no sin greater than any other according to the bible. That is the problem I have with labeling myself as a conservative. We tend to believe that our beliefs are always correct and that means everyone else must be wrong. Now I know that I am not a liberal because I do not like what they stand for. But if I am not a die hard conservative. What category do I fall into ??

( Trying to find my way )
