Its a joke. He was not serious. If we get offended by this type of hyperbole then we are just as "PC" as the liberals. Free Speech will then be attacked at both ends of the political spectrum. I thought conservatives had a sense of humor. What happened to that?

You're right that he is not serious in the sense that no one thinks he is actually calling for legislation that would require the lobotomization of Republicans.

But the hostility towards Republicans that he expresses is no joke, nor is his description of them as "stupid." There's no question that, as the Wells Republicans described in their initial press release about the lack of faculty political diversity, there is an intimidating atmosphere in many of their classrooms.

Vawters's comments perfectly illustrate the kind of problem they described, and I think it's appropriate to bring that to people's attention.

If you or your child were a young student in Vawter's class, in which he called Republicans stupid and called for their lobotimization, I'm not sure you would find it funny.

Why should we hold back? Republicans will have their rights to free speech attacked whether we respond with a sense of humor or not. The attacks are completely one-sided. The only way to kill the PC beast is to make those who created it turn against it themselves, and Lord knows they won't do that until it starts hurting themselves as much as it does us.

If Republicans were -ever- spared the knife, I'd agree with you. But if we're going to get roasted over that fire no matter WHAT we do, why should we keep it all to ourselves? Let them feel the heat, and see how willing they are to use it again in the future.

Perhaps. But if a conservative "joked" in a campus-wide email that all welfare mothers should be sterilized, or all blacks should be given free brain transplants to bring their IQs up, that person would be fired instantly.

I'm just sick of liberal profs being able to "joke" about things like forcibly lobotomizing conservatives, and nothing at all is said. This gives the patina of approval to the underlying validity of his "joke."
