SOMETHING needs to be improved. Could the guns be carried inside clear plastic bags that still allow them to be operated? One would have to replace the bag after firing the gun, but that would be a minor nuisance at best.

Some soldiers place a rubber over the muzzle to keep out grit. That preserves the integrity of the barrel and throat if it's fired. It also works to prevent filling the barrel with sand if there's much of it stirring around.
