Some soldiers place a rubber over the muzzle to keep out grit. That preserves the integrity of the barrel and throat if it's fired. It also works to prevent filling the barrel with sand if there's much of it stirring around.

Is the muzzle the only place that dust can go? Is the action part sealed? How about dust that gets in there when they're loaded?
