Jessica: Army used me
NY Daily News ^ | November 7, 2003 | CORKY SIEMASZKO

Jessica Lynch has angrily accused the Pentagon of using her for propaganda. The 20-year-old private, portrayed as a female Rambo after she was captured by Iraqis during a blazing gun battle, then freed by American troops, told ABC there was no reason for her rescue from an Iraqi hospital to be filmed.

"They used me as a way to symbolize all this stuff," Lynch said in an interview with Diane Sawyer that airs Tuesday, Veterans Day.

"Yeah, it's wrong," Lynch said. "I don't know why they filmed it, or why they say the things" they said.

That footage of U.S. commandos wheeling a grimacing Lynch to a waiting chopper was among the most dramatic of the war - and helped cement her image as a female warrior.

But Lynch said the true heroes were the soldiers who saved her.

"They're the ones that came in to rescue me," she said. "I'm so thankful that they did what they did; they risked their lives. ... They are my heroes."

She also disputed the Pentagon's early version of her capture by Iraqis, which suggested she had heroically defended herself - going down only after firing all her ammo.

Lynch says her M-16 jammed and she never got off a shot.

"My weapon did jam and I did not shoot, not a round, nothing," she said simply.

There was no immediate response from the Pentagon, which awarded Lynch a Purple Heart for her injuries.

ABC released excerpts of Lynch's first television interview yesterday after the Daily News obtained a copy of Lynch's authorized biography and revealed its most shocking secret - that she was raped by her Iraqi captors.

She has no memory of the rape. The book says there was a three-hour gap after her capture, a blank in her mind, during which she was assaulted.

"Even just the thinking about that, that's too painful," she told Sawyer.

Lynch said she was awakened from her stupor by searing pain.

"I seriously thought I was going to be paralyzed for the rest of my life," she told ABC.

The young soldier said at first she did not trust her Iraqi doctors - and tried to stifle her screams.

Trapped in her bed, Lynch said, she tried to tame her terror by thinking about her family, her fiancé, Sgt. Ruben Contreras, and her G.I. buddy Lori Piestewa.

After she was rescued, she learned Piestewa was dead.

In her book, "I Am a Soldier, Too," author Rick Bragg says the scars on Lynch's body and medical records indicate she was anally raped, and tells the reader to "fill in the blanks of what Jessi lived through on the morning of March 23, 2003."

Lynch says her unit was sent into battle armed only with M-16s - no grenades or anti-tank weapons - and in lumbering trucks that could not keep up with the convoy barreling toward Baghdad.

When the trucks in her unit tried to catch up, radio contact with the main convoy was lost - and so were they.

She was filled with foreboding.

"Jessi's fear of being left behind was beginning to come true," Bragg wrote.

I've always defended this girl, who went through hell. But if she starts dissing the Army, after rescuing her, giving her the best medical care available and affording her the opportunity to cut a sweet book deal, I'll be very disappointed in her.

Raped women often seldom distance themselves from the act of rape and blame the saviors.

PFC Lynch wasn't responsible for the overall screwup. She does have a sarg for a fiance(husband?) and lots of military friends. She should at least speak w/o trashing, or allowing the military to be trashed by such leftist enemies. IOWs, even though she's ~20, she should think first before opening her mouth

If you're over 20, then you should realize that this is a liberal trashing of Lynch and the military and treat as the propaganda it is. Read the article again and tell me where she was angry. There's no anger in what she said, she is simply saying the story was wrong .

Personal integrity is more important to her than everything else, this is what makes her an awesome young gal in this generation of greed and selfishness.

That's right. The people who are upset that she's not lying should be ashamed of themselves.

"Face the facts, the Pentagon had the film rolling and the special effects sparkling..."

The video released to the press of her rescue was not complete, just brief highlights. I don't recall seeing any video of the operation from start to finish. Missing is their entrance into the building, their initial finding of Lynch, getting her on the stretcher, etc. The part that was shown on the news channels was a small segment of what actually occurred. I think she'd have more of a complaint if the Army had released the total recovery of her. I think she's whining unnecessarily.

It amazes me that all her bashers have been screaming for her to deny the story and say she isn't a hero since April, and when she finally does that, they accuse her of speaking against the military! You're right, their only purpose is to bash her. I think because they feel threatened by what she has sacrificed for her country.

Unless you work as a creative writer, you missed your calling.

The title of this article is a lie. She never said the Army used her and that's it. They made it sound worse than it was.

The weapon didn't jam if she never fired it.

I was going to say that. The safety was probably on.

Oh please. She was led into that by a liberal reporter, Diane Sawyer, on the most liberal network there is, ABC. There's no doubt they're doing everything they can to put down Lynch and the Army. They're covering for the Washington Post.

I have no doubt they're slanting things. But unless you can show me they fabricated her quote...

She's an adult in the Army and M16/4s aren't some new gizmo with quirks.

She went through basic, she knows how to operate a weapon. She was also in a LOT of pain and her friends are dead. There are a lot of reasons why her weapon wouldn't work. Proper care is just one of them. Ignorance is not. All of them should have had their weapons ready after the convoy got seperated. What we really should be looking at is why that happened. That's what doomed these troops.

"Such an ungrateful idiot."

It will be interesting to see just how factual the network movie about her will be. Let's see if she complains about being used by them when it's over. I'm still trying to figure out how someone who isn't supposed to have any memory of what happened to her writes a book or has a movie made about them.

I don't think the army used Jessica Lynch. Certainly the military feminist lobby subgroup of the army used her, and they have a lot of free access to the media. I suspect this issue of Lynch and the feminazis in DoD is the cause of SecDef's public affairs butch 'spokesperson' (whatever her name was) resigning.

Other thoughts on the irony of war.

1. Lynch is probably alive because her weaponed jammed. During a firefight, the natural tendency is to kill everything shooting back at you. No doubt that is what the Iraqis did.

2. No excuse for her weapon jamming. None. How many times in your life do you cross into enemy territory during a war? Having weapons lock and loaded and ready to fire is the first thing any soldier would ensure he was capable of doing upon crossing the LD.

"the Pentagon ?

how about the "news" media?"

Yes. Will SOMEBODY puh-leeze get this story straight. Can ANYBODY find a PENTAGON released story that described her as a female Rambo? Now the lying media has Jessica believing this tripe.

Read it please.... Her rescuers are her heroes. She just isn't sure why she was put on a pedestal by the brass instead of them. This is a humble response.

I propose, when we read the book, she spends far more lines wondering and perhaps being a bit taken back at the media spectacle that surrounded her. The media won't report that part.
