AUSTIN-- Mexican President Vicente Fox is to cap off a tour of the U.S. Southwest here today by promoting cross-border business ties while striving to kickstart his legislative priority: giving millions of Mexicans the opportunity to legally work in the United States.
This is Fox's first visit to Texas as president.
Previously, two trips were canceled, one in protest of the execution of a Mexican citizen convicted of killing a Dallas police officer and another in light of mounting tension over the dispute about Mexico's water debt to the United States.
Today, he's to meet with political and business leaders, students at the University of Texas at Austin, and Texas newspapaer editors before returning to Mexico City.
"He will want to talk about immigration at length. I will want to talk about immigration, and water and education and economic development and infrastructure," Gov. Rick Perry said before a formal dinner Wednesday with Fox at the Governor's Mansion.
Perry said Fox's talk of amnesty for undocumented workers was "by and large an idea that is not in the realm of reality," because it lacks support in the U.S. Congress.
...snip...
Before Wednesday's dinner, about a dozen anti-immigrant protestors gathered outside the Governor's Mansion and used a bullhorn to yell at Fox, briefly drowning out Fox and Perry as the two leaders formallly greeted each other and dinner guests.

This article is pretty good news. Hopefully, nothing has gone on behind our backs at all these meetings.
The water debt may have been a wild card for Fox, but we have had alot of rain this year and are not begging.
Some years the Texas farmers have actually begged for water that is owed to them. This year water was provided by the Good Lord in the form of rain. The farmers have had no help from Bush or Fox.

Another angle on this...I don't know if Texas is battling budget problems, but we are in Arizona.
Most all economists agree that one dollar of wages results in as much as $3 in local spending. The average sales tax in Arizona is 7%, so we see at least $.21 of revenue per $1.00 of wages regardless of the legal (tax-paying) status of a worker.
Now, cut to the admission by President Fox that Mexican emigres send nearly $300 Billion home annually, making them Mexico's second largest source of foreign income.
When you do the math, you realize that as much as (using the 7% figure) $63 Billion in sales tax revenue is forever lost to the states.
But they're just doing jobs Americans won't right?

You can bet Texas has a budget problem. We have a $10 billion deficit. We are #2 to California in dificit and illegals.

Fox has "stopped using amnesty and is instead promoting the issue of... providing some protection against the exploitation of those workers,"Which, contrary to what Fox intends, may be the fastest way to solve the illegal immigrant problem altogether.
The sooner greedy employers are forced to pay a competitive wage to these folks the sooner they'll stop hiring 'em.

Yee-Ouch, the truth hurts, don't it?
Hey Foxy, how 'bout removing all your criminal and illegal aliens from my country!

I think Fox really wants amnesty so he can be the official president of 2 countries.
We will never solve the illegal problem until the laws already on the books are enforced. It would be so simple.
Instead, elected officials are just winking and nodding at the laws. Disgrace.

Ok, all, I was reminded that my memory stinks! (My words)
The remittances from Mexican emigres in 2003 reached a record $12 Billion.
So, going back to the math (7% of $36Bn) the States lost $2,520,000,000 in sales tax revenue in 2003 alone.
Sorry for the error!

I imagine fox was surprised to be greeted with anti-immigration protestors who drowned out his speech with a bull horn. I'll bet Fox got that message along with Perry.

10% of Mexico's citizens already live in the US. Maybe Fox should be focused on how he can make his craptastic, 3rd world country hospitable for their own citizens.

Your memory probably just got ahead of itself.
The official figure of $12 billion plus the unofficial figure of food stamps, free medical, free education, free housing probably adds up to $300 billion or more. Especially since we little peons can't find how much the emergency medicaid costs are or anything else regarding the precious Mexican vote.
Notice the official figures are from Mexico.

"Thank God for small favors." Yes, and keep those faxes going.
I think C. Rice and Powell will be meeting with Mexican officials next. We need to fax them also.
