Is it just me, or is "brutally raped" a redundancy? Can someone be gently raped? Tenderly raped? Humanely raped?

I misread it the first time as "Friends" (still waking up). Was about to get upset.

Yes; this has been confirmed by the Department of Redundancy Department.

All rape is violence, but, without in any way condoning or lessening the crime, there can be degrees of brutality in it. There is a difference, for example, between the rapist who obtains compliance by threats of harm, but is physically gentle, and the one who simply beats his victim into helplessness before forcing himself upon the victim roughly.

Kinda like being brutally murdered, which happens quite frequently here in Houston.

well, there actually is a "taxonomy" of rapists- some use the threat of violence alone, and break off the attack if they are given resistance- some other enjoy having a woman struggle, and use violence to subdue the victim. Others ALWAYS use violence, often of horrific levels, simpley because they like it.

Apoparently, raped is just raped, but when the person is otherwise abused, it is brutal.

Well, I think it is a reference to whether the rape was conducted by threat of additional violence (i.e., at gunpoint) or was conducted by actual use of additional violence.

Don't get me wrong, all rape is inherently brutal. But when they say 'brutally raped' I tend to think of it as rape PLUS a vicious beating.

Put it another way, think of the distinction between simple assault and aggravated assault.

If I attack you from behind, knock you down by force and take your wallet, that would be a simple assault.

If I attack you from behind, knock you down by force, take your wallet, and then continue to beat you to within an inch of your life--if I go totally DeNiro on you--until you're left in a bloody heap, that would be aggravated assault.

Don't be an ass! You can be violently raped or not! You can be coersed to cooporate or be drugged!
