ARMORED WARFARE: Mystery Projectile Explained

The "Mystery Projectile" that caused the penetration of an M-1 tanks side armor was probably a Russian RPG-7V or similar type. This is an improved version with wave shaper in the HEAT warhead. The pictures (see here)  of the penetration show classic HEAT warhead circular flash and light material splash (aluminum or similar from outer warhead casing) in a roughly circular area and at between 500 - 800 mm radius around the penetration hole. It also seems as if the entry hole on the skirt plate has a ragged and enlarged hole. This is consistent with wave shaped warheads that do not have optimal performance at point of impact as the jet is still being focused. In pictures 2-5 there is virtually no spalling around the inside exit hole and immediately adjacent interior equipment. Only items directly in penetration path has been punctured or splashed with molten copper (see gun guard picture). It appears as if the jet was disrupted and started deflagrating by interior components spaced effect and material compositions. The last picture shows residual heat discoloration on the switch box, which is typical of molten metal heat transfer and short-circuit effects as can be expected when you send conductive liquid or particles into an electrical box.

The damage done is similar in appearance to that done to other armored vehicles that have been penetrated by an RPG-7. In this case, the round hit one of the few areas on the side of the tank that was vulnerable to penetration by an RPG round.

So much for Joseph Farah and his "secret weapon" hype nonsense.

Not much is more mundane than a higher-grade version of the RPG-7.

There are "lucky shot" areas on every tank ever built.

If this is a "newly built" projectile, does this mean the russians are supplying the enemies? Remember they did supply the GPS jammers.

Ahhh..the preverbial golden BB. I've seen a few of those.

Thanks for the factual presentation and explanation. It is refreshing to see facts instead of an ultra-secret weapon or government cover-up conspiracy theories.

The truth is that they don't have a clue what hit them.

You could be right. Note the small diameter of the penetrator from the photo, nowhere close to 500 mm, nor is the associated blackening from the device, as large as most RPG explosive impacts on the exterior hull skirting. Whatever it was left a smaller footprint than most Russian RPGs, hence the mystery:

Further, this incident would not have arisen to the level of concern it has unless there is something to be concerned about.

Discuss These Photos

The U.S. Army is not saying much about the "mystery projectile" that went through the side skirts and side armor of an M-1A1 tank last August 28th. Whatever it was just barely missed the tanks gunner (it went through the back of his seat and grazed part of his flak jacket) and put a pencil size hole nearly 50mm deep into the four inch thick armor on the other side of the tank. The damage may have been done by a projectile, not a shaped charge (which uses a jet of super-hot plasma to burn a hole in armor and put a quantity of plasma and molten metal inside the tank.) No known RPG would do that kind of damage. But some Western anti-tank rockets generate a different kind of plasma jet that might create the kind of damage done. A U.S. 25mm armor piercing shell (fired from the gun mounted on the M-2 Bradley armored vehicle) uses a small penetrator, but that penetrator is of depleted uranium, which burns like a flare once it is inside its target. One major unknown is the large number of portable anti-tank weapons (especially Russian and Chinese models) that have not been tested against the M-1 tank. It's not unusual for new weapons to have unpredictable effects once they are first used in combat. Until the army releases more information, if they have any, the mystery lingers.
