The Selective Service System wants to hear from men and women in the community who might be willing to serve as members of a local draft board.
Prospective Board Members must be citizens of the United States , at least 18 years old, and registered with the Selective Service (if male). Prospective Board Members may not be an employee of any law enforcement occupation, not be an active or retired member of the Armed Forces, and not have been convicted of any criminal offense.
Once identified as qualified candidates for appointment, prospective Board Members are recommended by the Governor and appointed by the Director of Selective Service, who acts on behalf of the President in making appointments. Each new member receives 12 hours of initial training after appointment, followed by 4 hours of annual training for as long as he or she remains in the position. They may serve as Board Members for up to 20 years, if desired.
Local Board Members are uncompensated volunteers who play an important community role closely connected with our Nation's defense. If a military draft becomes necessary, approximately 2,000 Local and Appeal Boards throughout America would decide which young men, who submit a claim, receive deferments, postponements or exemptions from military service, based on Federal guidelines.
Positions are available in many communities across the Nation. If you believe you meet the standards for Selective Service Board Membership, and wish to be considered for appointment please visit our web site at: http://www.sss.gov/fslocal.htm

When did it appear on the site--or was it always there?

Strange qualifications. Prospective Board Members must be citizens of the United States , at least 18 years old, and registered with the Selective Service (if male). Many adult men were never required to register with the Selective Service. Why are they barred from serving on this board? Women are presumably allowed and none of them ever registered. Perhaps it's simply poorly written.

It's unclear. I saw it linked on fark, and he doesn't usually run old news...

Whoa. That's uh, interesting . . .

Some requirements to be a board member are that they be:
U.S. citizens
at least 18 years old
not a retired or active member of the Armed Forces or any Reserve component
live in the area in which the board has jurisdiction
be willing to spend enough time at the position.
That SS registration sounded odd and lo, it is.
What, they couldn't cut and paste correctly.

In digging deeper into the site it only says if you were required to register you did. The dates of birth for which no registration was required are explicitly called out.

Thanks for the clarification. It wasn't much publicized, that's for sure.

I'm already in so for me, this would be moot, but interesting....

It's of no significance.
Restarting the draft requires an act of Congress, signed by the President.
The likelihood of that happening in this next election year is zero.

The last draft in a NATO country ended April 25, 1974.

"The likelihood of that happening in this next election year is zero. "Ya mean that America's enthusiasm for this war on terrorism is also hyped large and patriotism is now - wave the flag, talk the war, and employ a hired gun.

Perhaps.... however, if things really heat up SOMEPLACE, draft board organizations need to be set up in advance and ready to move!
The Army was real anxious to get my 33 year old nephew to re-enlist. And, he did!
He had been out of work in his IT field for a while and just doing work through a temp agency. He met up with a recruiter a JOB FAIR where he had gone looking for IT work.
Well, at least he is working now and serving his country, yet again! Plus, he can NOW continue to pay his bills!
And, the Indian programmers who replaced him at his previous IT job... will feel safer in the USA, knowing that a REAL AMERICAN is helping to protect their rights to come to American and take an American's job away from them!!(EXTREMELY ANGRY sarcasm off)
