It appears that the average Canadian has realized what most in the federal government have yet to. A poll commissioned by the Centre for Research and Information on Canada found that 44 percent of Canadians believe that Canada should have stronger ties to the United States. It's an increase of 18 percentage points since March and is at its highest point in three years.
While Canadians are clearly growing concerned about their ties to the United States, Canada's government has done little to bridge the distance. Thanks in part to undiplomatic talk before and after George W. Bush's election, the president has yet to make a visit to Canada outside of attending two international conferences and Prime Minister Jean Chrétien has only made one visit to the White House. To add injury to insult many prominent Canadians including officials in the prime minister's office seemed to take an "unholy glee" at what happened to the United States on and the days after September 11, 2001, stated historian J.L. Granatstein in a recent speech in Toronto.
"These Canadians and their friends did very serious damage to Canada's relations with the White House and the State Department," said Granatstein.
Foreign Affairs Minister Bill Graham best expressed the federal government's view on October 30 when he denied relations were in a "deep freeze." Said Graham, "This is a mug's game to go into that. The fact of the matter is that when we have specific problems, when we had the electricity blackout, the prime minister phoned up Mr. Bush, he took his call, we worked on it."
Despite Graham's assertion, it's safe to say that relations are at their frostiest since the days of Pierre Trudeau and Ronald Reagan and not surprisingly the problem partly stems from philosophical differences in approaches to policy. As an example, for Canadians foreign policy is about maintaining dialogue at all costs while Americans prefer a more pragmatic approach. Canada is in the business of trying to export its values while the United States is interested in protecting what it determines is in its national interest. As Granatstein pointed out in his October 21 speech, "Values or principles are for individuals, while nations have interests, above all."
Canada's "soft power" approach has been a dismal failure. The influence that Canadians believe they wield through kind words and understanding has had remarkably little effect in achieving our goals. Like Europe, Canada's influence is diminishing because cultural exchanges and foreign aid don't sway nations like Iran and other unstable rogue states at the cost of its relationship with the United States. As much as Canadians don't like to admit it, the velvet glove occasionally must reveal the iron first. As Canada's ability to project power has diminished over the past two decades, so has its voice. Particularly with the United States.

You still don't get the point, do you! I, and many other Americans, have decided that, regardless of how much trade and business we have done with Canada in the past, because of the lousy attitude, piss-poor political judgment, and duplicitousness of today's frenchy-twisted Canucks, whatever amount of commerce was done in the past will, from now on, be drastically reduced in the future. I refuse to knowingly buy any product or good that I can identify as having any Canadian connection. And this will be no hardship, I assure you. I can buy things manufactured in Australia, Italy, Spain, Poland, Britain, Japan, Chile, Malaysia, the Philippines, and many other countries that have shown the good sense of supporting America and Americans. I've had it with stupid ass Canucks and their asininity! And I'll bet that Canada needs the US market a hell of a lot more than the US needs Canada!

Oh dear...
skullstompers post was fair and and helpful.
You are off the mark in your critisism. Anger and insults are divisive at a time when we should be coming together to face the common foe.

oh? To say the Canadian government does not represent the people and sucks is helpful? And my remarks which are factual are not? OK.... Sad... there is no hope....
To: vanmorrison
Well we honestly don't need you to visit us, or buy any of our product. You will have a hard time not buying Canadian products, but you are free to try and do so. It will not hurt me....
But isn't it kinda tiresome not being able to see.... with your head buried in the sand?
To: mikes-opinion
no one on the globe trusts America.... Have you actually been outside of Canada and to these other countries to speak with such authority?
I actually have and have found people in South America, South Korea, and Africa actually like the US. And they trust the US, usually more then they trust their own government. (Which in some cases isn't saying much)
To put it quite bluntly they trust the US to come to their aid if things start to go to hell. Even Europe, who doesnt like our policies hollers every time that they have something that they cant handle.
Oh and as for this...(and Israel does not count due to them running the actual USA),
You are mistaken. It is the Build-a-Burgers who actually run the USA and the world. Why do you think there are McDonalds springing up everywhere and a world economic index is called the "Big Mac Index"? Why do you think that no two countries have ever gone to war with each other if they both had McDonalds in their countries? (Not until that little dust up in Yugoslavia anyway.)

You're just corroborating my earlier post that asserted that the greater majority of Canadians (about 80% using your own figures) are not reliable allies and do not support America in its greatest time of crisis since the Second World War! Why on earth should I, and any other sensible American, continue to fund a nation of two-faced hypocrites with our business? I won't; and many other Americans are waking up to the perfidy of the Canadians as well. I recently read a series of articles in the Detroit News that stated over 300 million dollars in trade was lost this year in the Detroit area alone due to the collapse of the cross border trade between the US and Canada. And it's gonna fall a whole lot more!
To: kanawa
ok. here they are in the complete with sources....
But many of you won't like it..... Sorry for the caps... but this is how I got it....
But I fear you will not be bale to read it. most of these types of Quotes are censored from America.
ARIEL SHARON, CURRENT PRIME MINISTER, IN AN INTERVIEW WITH GENERAL OUZE MERHAM, 1956 SAID:
" I DON'T KNOW SOMETHING CALLED INTERNATIONAL PRINCIPLES. I VOW THAT I'LL BURN EVERY PALESTINIAN CHILD (THAT) WILL BE BORN IN THIS AREA. THE PALESTINIAN WOMAN AND CHILD IS MORE DANGEROUS THAN THE MAN IS, BECAUSE THE PALESTINIAN CHILD'S EXISTENCE INFERS THAT GENERATIONS WILL GO ON, BUT THE MAN CAUSE LIMITED DANGER. I VOW THAT IF I WAS JUST AN ISRAELI
CIVILIAN AND I MET A PALESTINIAN I WOULD BURN HIM AND I MAKE HIM SUFFER BEFORE KILLING HIM. WITH ONE HIT I'VE KILLED 750 PALESTINIANS (RAFAH IN 1956). I WANT TO ENCOURAGE MY SOLDIERS BY RAPING ARABIC GIRLS AS THE PALESTINIAN WOMEN IS A SLAVE FOR JEWS, AND WE DO WHATEVER WE WANT TO HER AND NOBODY TELLS WHAT WE SHALL DO BUT WE TELL OTHERS WHAT THEY SHALL DO."
PRESIDENT BUSH, HE CERTAINLY TOLD YOU THE FENCE WOULD STAY. HOW LONG WILL THE U.S. BOW DOWN TO THE TERRORISTS ISRAELI? THE BLOOD OF THE PALESTINIAN PEOPLE IS ON THE HANDS OF ALL THE JEWS THAT SUPPORT SUCH BARBARISM AND ALSO ON THE UNITES STATES FOR IT SORBORN ACTIONS.
ARIEL SHARON,

EVEN IF YOU PROVE TO ME THAT THE PRESENT WAR IN LEBANON IS A DIRTY IMMORAL WAR, I DON'T CARE. EVEN IF GALILEE IS SHELLED AGAIN BY KATYUSHAS IN A YEAR'S TIME, I DON'T REALLY CARE. WE SHALL START ANOTHER WAR, KILL AND DESTROY MORE AND MORE,
UNTIL THEY WILL HAVE ENOUGH.
LET THEM TREMBLE, LET THEM CALL US A MAD STATE, LET THEM UNDERSTAND THAT WE ARE A WILD COUNTRY, DANGEROUS TO OUR SURROUNDINGS, NOT NORMAL, THAT WE MIGHT GO CRAZY IF ONE OF OUR CHILDREN IS MURDERED, JUST ONE! IF ANYONE EVEN RAISES HIS HAND AGAINST US WE'LL TAKE AWAY HALF HIS LAND AND
BURN THE OTHER HALF, INCLUDING THE OIL. WE MIGHT USE NUCLEAR ARMS.
EVEN TODAY I AM WILLING TO VOLUNTEER TO DO THE DIRTY WORK FOR ISRAEL, TO KILL AS MANY ARABS AS NECESSARY, TO DEPORT THEM, TO EXPEL AND BURN THEM, TO HAVE EVERYONE HATE US. HANG ME IF YOU WANT, AS A WAR CRIMINAL. WHAT YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND IS THAT THE DIRTY WORK OF ZIONISM IS NOT FINISHED YET, FAR FROM IT" ARIEL SHARON TO AMOS OZ, EDITOR OF DAVAR, DEC.

Nice that you mention WWII. Just where was America in WWII? Where was America when thousands of Canadians were dieing in the fight for freedom? In 1939 America was no where to be found... oh yea... now I remember... they were dealing in resources, and arms and financial backroom dealings with .... Germany! Thanks Grand daddy Bush for that one.
And while we are at it... Where was America in 1914 when thousands of Canadians were dieing to again protect freedom....
Two can play those silly games....
Hmmmmmm I guess when we needed you .... you were no where to be found.....
To: Sunsong
Are you aware that if we made a list of things that America and Americans have done for Canada and Canadians it would pages and pages long. That list would resemble a blank sheet of paper - minus the paper, which you would have had to get from Canada anyhow if there was even one example to scribble down. But there isn't even one and there never will be. So sit down.
To: mikes-opinion
Well we honestly don't need you to visit us, or buy any of our product. You will have a hard time not buying Canadian products, but you are free to try and do so. It will not hurt me.... Well, that's fine then. I'm also committed to not buying any canadian goods. Canada sucks and I really don't care whether you live or die. See ya, scumbag.

Yes I have traveled many times all over the globe. I have a sister in Sydney Aus. I have business relations with people in Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, England, as well as Germany. I have not gone to South America. Perhaps in the future I will.. but the situation down there is so much out of control I really don't have a desire to go there.. Perhaps is it too much interferance from some countries outside of South America that makes it so unsafe....

Hmmmm, guess I missed the average Canadian while out in Whistler last winter and only encountered the rare, anti-American jerks........
Obviously all the "averages" were vacationing in Florida.
One glance at my American flag pin which I wore proudly resulted in lift operators conveniently missing my chair allowing it to smash the back of my legs if I failed to break the momentum, to restaurant/bar workers giving me crappy service.
I have always been an advocate of skiing Canada rather than the U.S. but my experience last winter will forever prevent me from recommending that socialist dump as a skiing destination again......
As far as I am concerned, let the auto industry close their Canadian plants and let that damn country survive on trade with the French whores.....
FWIW, my step-mom was Canadian as are my 2 step-sisters.....If mom was still alive she would agree with me.

"That list would resemble a blank sheet of paper - minus the paper, which you would have had to get from Canada anyhow if there was even one example to scribble down. But there isn't even one and there never will be. So sit down." As I list one, your whole insulting statement is refuted and you are discredited. When Canada was calling President Bush a moron and telling us that they hate us "American bastards" you had a SARS outbreak in Canada (which, btw, was ineptly handled). Who did you immediately call for help? That's right, America, and we did come and help you.
The list of things that America and Americans have done for Canada is long indeed. I would suggest that you develop some appreciation, perhaps even gratitude, for the good ol' USA. And maybe, consider, writing on a Canadian site and not an American one.

This attitude from America not caring if any of us live or die is and was apparent. From WWI to WWII, and in trade relations... yes indeed we understand you really don't care. I admit that.
This is one of the problems with America. For the most part they do not care... Not unless there is profit or gains in power.....
Respect is understood to be something that you cannot forceably aquire. You cannot buy it, you cannot hold things hostage for it. It must be earned. The USA bank of respect is overdrawn.
To: Harmless Teddy Bear
Lie a lot? Please elaborate. Can you poubnt one out? Are you able to discuss that point if you find it?
