Several loud explosions have been heard in central Baghdad late on Monday night close to the headquarters of the US-led coalition.
According to Reuters and the Associated Press news agencies, five blasts were heard in swift succession, apparently from the western bank of the Tigris river.
The US military said three or four mortars had exploded in the centre of Baghdad but gave no details of casualties or damage.
Associated Press said a car bomb had earlier exploded in the city of Karbala close to a holy Shiite Muslim shrine. Three people were killed and 12 injured, witnesses said.
The blast occurred on a busy street less than 100 yards from the gold-domed Imam Hussein shrine in the city 165 miles south of Baghdad, said Mohammed Abu Jaffar al-Assadi, a Shiite cleric.
All the dead were apparently passers-by.
