This is different. You have to identify someone in a foreign country who is protected by his own security. You have to either get a Pakistani or someone who can pass for Pakistani to infiltrate and get close. Apparently, if Ijaz is right, this guy is a fundamentalist and surrounds himself with true believers. You just can't get assigned to his detail.
And this neglects the fact that there could be multiple people under him who are also involved, and his assassination would alert them. It also could destabilize Pakistan, bringing Musharref down, which would NOT be a good thing right now.
Things aren't as simple as they first appear.

I am not disagreeing with you. but they could have done this at any time, they have plenty of cells here with people ready to do something like that. no needs for hijackings, explosives, anything. just two guys in a car. yet it doesn't happen, why?
Bill Gertz on with Vester now. Has little faith in the IAEA. Says that everyone is focussing on one site in North Korea, but there is another site that we know little about.

Can you get a map of Times Square and post that? This could be crazy, but you never know what a Jihadi terrorist could be thinking.
I was just wondering about that circle (ball) on the Arabic map, the gold ball in the bin Laden photo with the suitcase nuke, and the ball that descends in Times Square on New Year's Eve. Just a thought.
Of course, the map could be of some route in London as well.

More from Debka...on Shermy's thread:
From the first week of December, according to our sources, trained al Qaeda terrorists have been creeping past the Saudi, Yemeni and undercover American special forces deployed in the area for long-running counter-terror operations. The terrorists have been heading out of their strongholds in Hadhramouth east of Sanaa, Yemens capital, and slipping north and then west bearing large quantities of shoulder-launched ground-air missiles, weapons and different types of explosives. The fundamentalist terrorists then split up between two Saudi towns: Najran and Jizran, capitals of the provinces of those names. The Inhabitants of both regions are ethnic Yemenis and would have lent a willing hand to their compatriot, Osama bin Laden, in the transfer of substantial forces from Hadhramauth.
From Najran, the fundamentalists with their tools have death have been heading north for missions inside the oil kingdom.
From Jizrans air and sea ports - and its 100 Red Sea islands, including the strategic Farasan Archipelago a second al Qaeda group has been making for overseas operations. From Jizran, they would have no difficulty in spiriting themselves and their weapons out of the country and out of the Middle East, as far as North America.
At Najran and Jizan alike, air links are available to main cities in the Middle East, the Persian Gulf and East Africa. According to DEBKAfiles sources, the working intelligence hypothesis is that they are already on their way to target destinations aboard outgoing passenger planes. It is also feared that some may have boarded unmarked aircraft waiting to pick them up and carry them to points unknown. At this stage therefore the number of al Qaeda operatives on their way to overseas locations cannot be established, any more than their destinations. Their names will not appear on any passenger lists.
Those of you who don't like Debka should remember that even a stopped clock is right two times a day.

at some point, keeping Musharaf in power while at the same time the nuclear information and material is coming out of the country, is counter-productive. what are we keeping him in power for, if the two things we want from him, the top AQ people and controls on the nukes, we aren't getting?
To: Miss Marple
Linda vester is one smart cookie. She asks all the right questions.
I can't figure out Ijaz. He strikes me as some sort of double agent.

Can you get a map of Times Square and post that?Times Square is toward the upper right, between 43rd & 45th on Broadway at 7th Avenue. Lower left has Madison Square Garden which sits directly above Penn Station.

From Internet Haganah today: Cyanide gas weapon, one example of instructions found onlineFound lurking in a 'throw-away' geocities account used for serving content linked to from various Arabic-language jihadist forums. Here's one slighly censored illustration:
The concept is pretty straight forward: a can with holes, a couple of chemicals in vials, each of which are fairly toxic in their own right, and all of which, if combined correctly, will result in the release of cyanide gas.
This is pretty typical of the stuff we're seeing these days. A rich mix of promises of some "blessed event" involving the death of many Americans, combined with howto instructions so that the new recruits can learn the tools and tricks of the trade in an environment where travel and communications are a little more difficult than they used to be.

The answer to your question is this: we keep him in power because the alternative is far, far worse. If Musharraf goes, he will be replaced by a fundamentalist Islamic nutcase, who will have nuclear weapons.
And Musharraf has helped us, no doubt about it. We have caught a lot of AQ in Pakistan.
To: Palladin
Yes, I can't figure Ijaz out, either. It seems to me that he is now so well-known that people wouldn't talk to him if they were up to no good. He also seems a little too polished.
I listen with a large grain of salt. Of course, MY knowledge of the Muslim world is confined to what I have learned since 9/11, so I am not really a good judge.

I lived in Manhattan for close to 4 years --- not far from Grand Central Station --- until 2001. I thought you, with your seemingly magical map powers, might be able to get a better map than I was for a slightly closer view. I will have to look for one of my old subway maps to make a comparison. Thanks very much though. :o)

I just finished reading that thread. Very disturbing, since we really have no control over pilots for foreign airlines.
AND, the pilots could be non-Arabs with an axe to grind.

More than just interesting . . . perplexing . . . large gathering in rural area in east as target? What would that be (college football season being over)?

From MSNBC article: "New intelligence indicates that al-Qaida remains intent on attacking large gatherings of people with chemical or biological weapons, official said. They said law enforcement agencies were looking closely at two rural locations one in the East and the other in the Southwest that were believed to be high on the terrorist target list."

Thank you for reminding us and posting that link.
Musharref is no angel. The alternative is worse.
Same goes for the Saudis. I don't like the thought of SA and its oil controlled by the nutcases.
