Subject: Symantec Says No To Pro-Gun Sites
You might want to reconsider buying Symantec products:

"A recent American Rifleman contained small column that said that Symantec's new Internet Security 2004 would block pro gun rights sites (i.e. NRA sites), while not blocking similar anti-gun rights web sites. Being the eternal skeptic, this claim was tested by downloading the trial version and running some tests against it. To my surprise I found the every NRA site was blocked and was in the category 'weapons.' This even included the NRA's Institute for Legislative Action. Some sites that were not blocked where such notable anti-gun rights site such as The Brady Campaign, and Good Bye Guns. The only anti-gun rights site that was blocked that I could find was Hand Gun Control's web site."
"My rather informal test still raises the spectre that a large corporate entity may be clandestinely trying to sway you or your child's political views by censoring content from one side of a political debate. This is indeed chilling, especially considering that such software is required to be used in libraries to protect children. Is this political slant common in censorware? Have slashdotters found similar glitches in other 'parental control' software?""
I've just started mailwasher and am getting used to it.Of all the links you gave above,I haven't yet tried the firewall tests or alternate browsers.
Shoot the Messenger seems to "not" apply to me because I am running Windows 98.Am I correct?
With the Windows Updates I download "direct x 9.0b" but can't seem to find or execute it.All other updates I've gotten easily.Any ideas?I'm not computer savvy and your help has been greatly appreciated.
All the other links you gave are working together very well for me,I'm really tickled with them. :)
Are you running firewall software? It's always a good idea, even if you have a dialup connection and (gag) AOL. And if you're running a firewall, it's always a good idea to test its effectiveness with those free tests.
Yes, I think that "Shot the Messenger" program was custom-made for Windows XP because:
I don't think you need to specifically need to execute DirectX -- if you have another program that needs it (typically higher-end game programs), that program will use it. Think of DirectX as a background utility.
Glad to hear the links were useful!! <|:)~
The direct x 9.0b downloads to me and shows on Windows Update to have downloaded but each time I check for updates, the Updates site tells me I need to download it again, even though my download history shows it to have successfully downloaded several times.
Oh well,I've gained a lot and am learning as I go.
Thanks again and if you ever need any problem critters removed from your place, maybe I can return the favor.:)
I've now put to use every link from your post #39 except an alternate browser and all are complimentary to each other. If I can put these to use in my condition, anyone should be able to and get these free safetys installed for themselves.I still can't figure out why the Windows Update keeps saying I need the DirectX 9.0b but that's no big deal.
I don't quite understand what an alt. browser will do for me yet.Would you suggest I try Mozilla or Opera as an alternate browser or will I have to make many changes in trading over and possibly become confused in the swapover?
Also, are there any simple, basic things I should be doing, like running the scandisk and defragmenter, that I may not know about or be doing through my simple ignorance of computers?
I can't put into words how much your tips are appreciated and any other thoughts you come up with can only put me even deeper, happily, into your debt.:o)
Not a good impression.
Me, too, although they now offer *some* degree of spam filtering with their free e-mail accounts.
