I have said it before, and I will say it once again -- I am so proud of our men and women who serve, and I truly admire them. Stand tall and be proud of our service men and women, past and present. You are great heroes and deserve to be treated as such. I wish you and your husband a lifetime of happiness wrapped up in one furlough-- until the next one.

You reminded me of a story right out of my crazy youth. I was driving to the airport to pick up a friend who was returning from Viet Nam via a healing stay at Bethesda. At the time, I lived in NY, and I'll never forget, rushing to Kennedy Airport to pick him up, and getting pulled over for speeding. As I handed my driver's license and registration to the Officer, I said, in my best Southern accent (having only visited Williamsburg, and, Roanoke, VA, to see cousins!!) with, "Y'all just haaaaive to let me go - I'm on the way to pick up my man at the airport, and he's been injured in 'Nam and I was getting my hair cut and lost track of the time, and I just have to be there on time, and......" and that the Officer held up his hand to stop me, handed my license and registration back, and gave me an escort (at 80 MPH!!!) to the airport.

All I can say is, it's a good thing I really was meeting someone, otherwise my conscience would be making me feel guilty to this day! But there was Frank, on crutches, waiting outside the Eastern Airlines terminal - and I've never been so glad to see anyone in my life!

Then, on the way home, I had to explain how come I had a police escort, complete with sirens and lights! But I sorta left out the Soothern accent thing!!!

And, btw, y'all is plural and not singular ..... I think the officer really gave you a break ..... or else he wasn't a Southerner either ..... LOL! Glad he helped you get to the airport, though.

See, I had lived in NY all my life and while I didn't have a Bronix accent, I did have something of a New Yawk accent. But I figured if I sounde like a Southern Belle, he'd let me go - and he did. It's the escort I hadn't quite figured on. Remember - the Viet Nam was was not "popular", and most of the returnees got out of their uniforms as fast as possible, to keep from having epithets like "baby killers" thrown at them.

I now have a bonified Southern accent, and the New Yawk only shows up when I'm either excited or mad or both!
