Here Come's The Sun
Space Weather News ^ | Nov. 2, 2003 | Space Weather News

Posted on 11/02/2003 5:58:12 PM PST by Barnacle

Another remarkable solar flare has erupted from giant sunspot 486--an X8-class blast at 1725 UT on Nov. 2nd. Because the sunspot is nearing the sun's western limb, this explosion was not aimed squarely at Earth. Even so, a coronal mass ejection (CME) is heading our way. Auroras could appear on Nov. 3rd or 4th when the fast-moving cloud delivers a glancing blow to Earth's magnetic field. Visit spaceweather.com for more information and images.

the earth's magnetic field, weakens it momentarily and substantially.

No more so than forcing two bar magnetes South pole to South pole and likewise with the North; momentarily the normal fields are displaced but 'weaken' is not a term I would use ...

I ask as one who knows little of these things. If two magnets are forced together South-to-South and North-to-North they try to get into a North-South alignment. They don't 'like' this orientation. Could not the same thing happen if a strong enough field approached from space? That is, could Earth wobble a little on its axis as the two fields interacted?

Yes, it's all a matter of degrees ... having said that, it would take an awful lot of 'matter' hitting the magnetosphere and ionosphere to have an effect. We are more likely to see the earth's magnetic field change due to internal forces (in fact, it moves yearly, in fact, it moves daily) ...

That I remember from Boy Scout days. Thanks.

3rd X-Class flare in 36 hours happened overnight. This is not even solar max.

Damn Michigan weather. Now they're predicting rain all week.

This is frustrating indeed.

Is an aluminum foil hat more effective if it is grounded???

Definitely. I heard it on Art Bell.

I don't know about the weakening part but the pressure of the solar wind does deflect the field closer to Earth and as the wind is composed of particles, and a CME is a boatload of them, it stands to reason that the deflection increases during them.

Another X-18. Probably no Earth directed CME this time. Still this is crazy for this part of the solar cycle.
