1AD soldiers, Iraqi police repel attack in Abu Ghraib market

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition soldiers were attacked at approximately 10:15 a.m., Oct. 31, while patrolling through the Abu Ghraib Market. A crowd soon formed, carrying banners of Saddam Hussein.  The crowd began lighting fires and throwing rocks at soldiers and Iraqi police officers.   Iraqi police began dispersing the crowd. Shortly after, the Abu Ghraib Police Station was attacked with mortars; no one in the police station was injured.

When the Coalition Forces returned to the market to evaluate the situation, they were again attacked. They returned fire on the attackers. At the same time, the Police Station came under attack by small arms fire. Iraqi police returned fire. After clearing people from the market, the Coalition closed the market.

Coalition soldiers received information about the people who conducted the attacks and passed this information to the Iraqi police.  Members of the Iraqi Police Service entered two mosques to locate the criminals, while Coalition soldiers searched a nearby house. In the two mosques, the house and the area surrounding them, Iraqi police and Coalition soldiers found numerous illegal weapons, including 24 AK-47 rifles, two pistols, and a 120mm tube. The soldiers also recovered three rocket propelled grenade launchers, 4000 7.62 mm rounds and four additional pistols.

Coalition soldiers used only the force necessary to eliminate the immediate threat to ensure their safety and the safety of innocent Iraqi citizens.

Every day Coalition forces and Iraqi police work together to provide a safe and secure environment.

I thought that A.N.SW.E.R. had coordinated a big demonstration in Baghdad this weekend. Have you heard any thing about the much media hyped protest that was scheduled for this weekend or don't protests occur during the "HOLY" month of ramalama ding dong?

ANSWER in Baghdad, seriously? Only the loyalists and terrorists would welcome them. Most Iraqis would kick their fannies back over the border to a less free neighboring nation.

Six months since Pres. Bush declared the end of major combat ops in Iraq on May 1st - and the press still hasn't investigated ANSWER for parroting Saddam's anti-American lies to raise funds for their rallies - fraud. (^;

At least one Union - with help from a Utah prof - was organizing, inciting Iraqi workers over the net last summer:

I'm waiting for the Iraqi police to start taking these creeps out. Those, and the ones who danced after the downing of the Chinook need to be rounded up or shot down.

Yes, RC, prayers for our troops, their families and loved ones.

I was relieved to see the report about Mike, mystery-ak's husband. Thank you, MEG. I was concerned, but afraid to inquire.

Thank you, MEG! I finally got through the thread where mystery posted about Mike's 'kids'. So sad! Ragtime Cowgirl pinged me to the R & R thread and I posted there, also.

They'll have some tough days during a time that they expected to be entirely joyful. I hope they find some worry-free time for themselves.
