The lawyer really kept his cool or just reacted instinctively.......playing dodge-'em till the perp stopped firing or maybe ran out of bullets.
Another look at the tape leads me to believe that when the photog was trailing the shooter who was walking away, the perp turned around and looked at him. It appeared to me that he then made a move toward his pocket, perhaps to shoot the camera guy. Watch for it. See what you think.
Then, like the cavalry, out of nowhere comes the heroic off-duty officer who makes that flying neck-hold and bring-down of the old dude in the twinkling of an eye.
Wow, I was so gobsmacked that it was hard to concentrate on any of my housework for a while.

I saw that film on the news tonight. Geez. I'll throw a bizarre theory out there. If the shooter had wanted to kill him, he could have. He had him, deer in the headlights. Possibly, he didn't care if he killed him or not, just wanted to empty his anger at him. I think he succeeded. I think his lawyer thinks so too. Bet he had to go home and change his undies immediately.
That wasn't really heroic. Cool, but not heroic.
Heroic would've been if he had tackled the guy while he was doing the shooting, which from the look of the tape he easily could've done. The shooter was so involved in his, uh, work that a couple guys could've taken him down easy.
