"Only the 28th? I'd heard of the Edmund Fitzgerald, but assumed it was something from way in the past."

Hardly.

The Edmond Fitzgerald sank in 1977; but, was built in the 50s.
As I'm sure you already know, she was named after the Milwaukee based then Chairman of Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company, the MV's owner. (ie, "The Quiet Company"?)

Was the biggest ship on the Great Lakes at the time & one of the prized jewels of the impressive Unite States Steel fleet running iron ore pellets between places like Marquette Michigan & Cleveland, Ohio.

I clearly remember my father going out of our way while we vacationed in the UP of MI just so we could tour the Edmund Fitzgerald during an open house, while she was docked at Sault Ste. Marie, MI.

Recall going through just about every part of that ship, too.
To this very day one of my most prized possessions from my youth is a small flip-card booklet my folks bought me in the Edmund Fitzgerald's gift shop which detailed the ship's specs & had some very beautiful color photgraphs of her from different perspectives.

While living in Fairbanks Alaska my then fiance' sent me the Milwaukee Journal front page headline of her floundering in Lake Superior.
Had a strange kind of attatchment to the Edmund Fitgerald, felt the loss of all hands much in the same way as the surviving families of her crew.

"Thanks for the tip; when I hear German being spoken, while seeing English subtitles, I get all gemischtepickles, and get the worst of both worlds."

Das Boot ranks up there amoung the very best motion pictures ever made depicting WWII.
That it'd be done from the German's POV, made it all the more facinating.

As for The Perfect Storm?

Sorry.
When I saw George Loony starred in it, the thing was doomed from that instant onward, so I never watched it.

...never will, too.

I imagine the story of the Edmund Fitzgerald is a haunting one for anyone who has traveled up around Lake Superior in the fall. Lake Superior has always had a strange, ominous "feel" to it -- and it always seems to be raining there whenever I'm driving the Trans-Canada from "the Soo" to Thunder Bay.

The loss of ALL hands?! Of such a HUGE ship?! In Lake Superior?! Pardon my ignorance, but what about the Coast Guard?

George Loony.

Now, that's fitting. I like that.
