WASHINGTON -- Feeling the heat of Southern California's spreading wildfires, the Senate is rushing today to finish long-delayed legislation to rid forests of excessive buildup of brush and shrubbery that can fuel such deadly disasters.

After months of inaction because of Democratic discontent with "Healthy Forests" legislation proposed by the Bush administration and approved by the House of Representatives, the Senate on Wednesday overwhelmingly approved a compromise intended to put more money into protecting homes and businesses while shielding old-growth forests from the increased thinning operations.

Environmentalists, however, regard the House-passed bill as anathema because it dramatically reduces environmental reviews and opportunities to appeal

These retards would absolutely rather see scorched earth than lose a single tree to a saw. Maroons.

Those in Washington who voted to create this mess, and who have continued to stall fixing it, are as guilty as if they had started the fire themselves.

Trees don't live forever. Managing the forests is a good thing.

***The Bush administration's "Healthy Forests" legislation would permit accelerated operations, including logging, to clear the forest areas while the Senate compromise focuses at least half the effort on protecting homes and communities.***

Anybody have an explanation of what "protecting homes and communities" means if it doesn't involve clearing the forest areas of brush and other fire fuel?

The bill concentrates on clearing brush and protecting old growth forest. In other words, the Senate covers its butt by acting on Californias problem but ignores the real forest problems.
