Reverse Stance on Teachers with Guns
Oct 29, 2003 2:30 pm US/Central CHICAGO (CBS/AP) Republican U.S. Senate candidate Steven Rauschenberger said he's changed his mind about allowing some teachers who are trained to use firearms to carry concealed weapons in their classrooms.
Rauschenberger said in an open letter sent Tuesday to supporters that after consulting with law enforcement officials and educators, guns do not belong in classrooms.
"I have concluded that the risks of having a loaded gun in a classroom outweigh any possible benefits," Rauschenberger said. "As such, I do not support legislation that would allow teachers to carry guns in classrooms."
In an interview with a Chicago radio station that aired Sept. 28, Rauschenberger said he supported legislation that permitted people who were trained to use firearms and had a criminal and psychological background check to carry concealed weapons if they worked in dangerous situations, including classrooms in crime-ridden neighborhoods.
Rauschenberger, a 10-year state senator from Elgin, is among at least seven people who have announced their candidacy for the Republican nomination to replace GOP Sen. Peter Fitzgerald.
At least eight Democrats are seeking their party's nomination for the seat.

What a nancy boy. If I got that letter as a supporter, I'd respond that I was no longer a supporter. No courage to those convictions.

Maybe he's giving the teachers union a taste of their own medicine.
How do they feel being disarmed around crimminals? Does it feel comfortable? Huh? Huh? Do they still believe in gun control when THEIR butts are at risk?

I have concluded that the risks of having a loaded gun in a classroom outweigh any possible benefits,"Really? Why don't you ask the students of Pearl,MS? Or, perhaps the students at the Appalachian Law School how they feel about it. In BOTH cases guns in the hands of LAW ABIDING citizens SAVED lives.
But, why let FACTS get in the way of your feelings?

...to the point of sacrificing a discussion of self defense for electability. Pathetic.

He is pandering and looking to get elected. There is no waffling back to allowing guns after the debate has been shut down like this. He has made up his mind after talking with LE and educators (how nice).

That's funny, I've never heard of a woman named Steven before. Obviously it can't be a man, it doesn't have the proper equipment.

I'm sure the teacher's union got to him (why the teacher's union opposes armed teachers is beyond me, however.)

That's thought. It would be fun to give the teacher's a dose of their own medicine. The only problem is I wonder how many anti's would have carried?
