Oct. 29 Rachel Rubin collects what offends her, such as a "Fight inbreeding, ban country music" bumper sticker. "Let's see: Incest, funny or not funny?" she says.
She has salt-and-pepper shakers shaped like poor whites in rags. And perhaps the worst item in her cache, Rubin says, is a set of rotting costume "hillbilly" teeth. "I can't think of any instances where it's OK to make fun of someone who lacks medical care," says Rubin, an American studies professor at the University of Massachusetts in Boston.
Rubin belongs to a steadily growing group of academics and activists who want politically correct consideration for poor and rural whites. They see a double standard at play that makes phrases like "hillbillies," "rednecks," "hicks," "white trash," and "trailer trash" socially acceptable, unlike epithets aimed at other groups.
"The reason they are acceptable is that they're about white people and not seen as racist and derogatory," says Anthony Harkins, history professor at Western Kentucky University and author of the forthcoming book Hillbilly: The Cultural History of an American Icon. "We tend to degrade people of lower class in general."
Expressions like "redneck" and "white trash" are interchangeable these days, although they have different origins. "Redneck," for example, once described people who work outside in the sun. "That doesn't apply anymore," Rubin said. "What it really means is class."

"Yeah, 30 minutes from Louisville will put you right in the hub of a corrupt sports program and lousy football. Go Cards."Uh, if you're implying Lexington/UK, there's a speeding ticket in your future if you travel that distance in 30 minutes. It's an hour at best (doing the speed limit) on I-64.
That said, I don't understand what corrupt program you're talking about...after all, Denny Crum-bum is gone and y'all have a real coach now in Mr. Pitino. Maybe he'll win a national championship for you guys...after all, it's been so long since Loserville has had one, you must've forgotten how good it feels to have a decent basketball team to follow!
Football? Well, you have a point there...UK football just plain sucks. For that reason, I've never really been a fan of college football, but I am very proud of my alma mater, the Div. 1AA Champs, the WKU Hilltoppers.

I believe that I am fully qualified to talk about rednecks ... I am one. Born and raised on a farm, I could drive a tractor and knew how to hook up the Bush-Hog to the tractor's PTO by the time I was 7. I got my first gun at age 10. I hunt. I grew up riding dirt bikes. I currently drive a Jeep, and I cuss whenever I damn well want to. I also have a college education, have travelled all over the world, am well read, and earn more than 6 figures a year. I am broad-minded, and broadly capable at a variety of things ... but I am still a redneck, and damn proud of it.
So go ahead and make all the jokes you want, because there is one thing that differentiates me (and us rednecks in general) from all the other subjects of racial and class-oriented jokes -- the one thing that I will NEVER be is a pathetic, whining, easily offended, life-long VICTIM!

Did you see the special report GQ did on the place a few years back, talking about how it was a hotbed of militia activity? No. Any idea where I can find it?
Doesn't surprise me, though. A freedom-loving citizen with a gun - and possibly wearing camo (shudder) - is enough to make the liberal "metrosexuals" at GQ pee their pants.

I don't know where you could find it now. I only bought the issue because it had an attractive female on the cover, and that was several years ago. The only thing I specifically remember about the article was the discussion of how Timothy McVeigh had spent time at Knob Creek.
