They continue to embrace the policies which started this trend. To think that there aren't a lot of Democrat VOTERS who think like Zell, (and obviously the Dems are oblivious) is a BIG mistake.
Gore's CAMPAIGN, which bordered on insanity, started thinking Dems to sit up and take notice, then the ascension of Pelosi, will both prove in hindsight to be pivotal after the bludgeoning they will take in 04.

It is pretty amazing that they can't see a trend, here. In fact, not only are they ignoring it, they are going even further in the same direction that caused it. As you said, appointing Pelosi at the cost of alienating even thier more moderate members, was nothing more than a slap in the face. Their ignorance is only exceeded by their arrogance.
