In Japan, a senior member of the doomsday cult responsible for a deadly nerve gas attack on a Tokyo subway has been sentenced to death.

Tomomasa Nakagawa is the tenth member of the Aum Supreme Truth cult to receive the death penalty.

Nakagawa bowed to the judge after the verdict was handed down.

The court ruled that the 41-year-old played a "key role" in releasing sarin gas in the Tokyo subway system in 1995.

The attack killed 12 people and injured thousands.

The trials stemming from the incident will soon reach a climax.

Shoko Asahara, the leader of the cult, is also on trial, and his defence lawyers are expected to offer their closing arguments tomorrow.

Death Sentence for Doomsday Doctor

"PA"

A doctor who was a senior leader of the doomsday cult that carried out the deadly 1995 nerve gas attack on Tokyo’s underground will be hanged for his role in that crime and several other murders.

Tomomasa Nakagawa, 41, was sentenced to die today by the Tokyo District Court for helping to make the sarin nerve gas used in the attack, which killed 12 people, and another earlier attack that killed seven people.

He was also found guilty of taking part in earlier cult murders.

Nakagawa is the tenth member of the Aum Shinri Kyo cult to be given the death sentence.

Death penalty in Japan? Don't the anti-death penalty types always claim that the US is the only "civilized" country that still has the death penalty?

You're right. I also remember them bringing this "fact" into play. Along with the statistic about low gun crimes, too. Typical liberal lies

They hang 'em there. No fanfare, no demonstrations, no TV coverage, no last-minute dramatic reprieves. Noose on, trapdoor down. Sayonara.

The liberals used to brag that only the US, Russia and China were still carrying out death as a punishment. However, if you check around, there are probably 20 civilized countries that would go onto that list. The one comment that they can make...is that Japan rarely if ever hands down the death penelty. You really have to cause great pain and suffering on society in Japan to earn that punishment.

Oh, man! . . . I wasn't aware the trials were still in progress. I thought they had been wrapped up years ago. Talk about justice delayed!

During the days of apartheid, I think the libs liked to say that it was just us and South Africa, that *other* horrible, racist society, like the USA.

Even when we do get around to executing someone here, it takes what seems on average more than 10 years from the commission of the crime to the time of execution.

Does anyone know how long it typically takes in Japan? I have a feeling they don't have our seemingly endless appeals proecess.

It's one thing to want to improve our country but the left attacks America like it is Nazi Germany.(I say Nazi because they don't acknowledge the terrible acts of the communists.)
