Sadly, many of the Haridim here in NYC are bought off by Chucky's, er, "pork," although they do have a history of voting for GOP candidates in the past. Dov Hikind, the assemblyman (D) from Borough Park, is more conservative on many social issues than many GOPers.

Personally, I think most of this trend is rooted in the horribly failed Middle East policies of the Clinton Administration, especially in his dealings with Israel. The carnage of the Oslo years can only be lain in his lap—as well as Albright and the Democrats. Bodansky's book, "The High Cost of Peace...." carefully chronicles it all, and the Conservative Jewish community represented at FR is very effective at articulating the same. Give one to a Jewish friend who is "sitting on the fence." It'll push 'em right over like Humpty-Dumpty.
