I can't tell if the tide is turning or if they're just being cautious

Tue - October 28, 2003
Updates since 9:07am (PDT).
Worse case scenario is here, but the battle rages on.
Backfires are being used on 18; so far, so good.
The next priority for air support is to hinder the eastern part of the fire from advancing.
- Interstate 15 is now shut down. They are evacuating parts of Devore again. Big flare up.

400-500 feet AGL in a much lighter Seahawk over the Cedar Canyon fire would be...ahem...an experience. It'd be a rodeo in the lighter helo, that's for sure.
Back to work for me.

Choppers can operate at the height but they are not loaded with water. The small amount of water they could hold would not make that difference.

Due to smoke or flare up? Don't have my scanner up yet. Some poor soul on Local Fox 11 is asking why there is not more air support in the mountains but in Simi instead...sheesh...sounded like he was whining. He was an evac, so I will try to be kind.

Everyone should have to drive Rim of the World drive from Arrowhead to Big Bear at least once in their life!
They just ordered an evacuation from Big Bear all the way down HW 38 -- it is not mandatory for now but could be shortly. They are expecting the fire to keep heading east. Wonder if they got a report that the winds are shifting to blowing in from the ocean to the east?
They are also talking about going into Lake Arrowhead with a shift of wind.

You don't just gun it on Rim of the World drive or you may just be going over the side and it is long drop to the bottom.

With the voluntary evacuation all along HW 38, it sounds like the fire is definitely moving east. That would explain the panaromic view what laine and I saw on KTLA earlier. Fire seemed to be all along HW 18 heading to the east.

'If this is going to be a new face of warfare, where your enemies (foreign Al Qaeda or domestic ELF) are going to set fires in a coordinated way, we had better have contingency plans involving rapid response by the military assets already available in SoCal and elsewhere.'
"Is this speculation? Was it terror set?"
You decide:

Before they signed off, KTLA said CHP told them that it's fire actually making a move on the Glen Helen area near I-15. That's why they closed it.

Some of the drop-offs on the way to Ensenada are pretty respectable - straight down into the ocean, no guard rails (at the time). who would ever know you went over. Lost some co-workers to a car accident on that road.

IMO the news media has become modern day Soap Opera's.

I can't believe KTLA dumped their coverage to got to Maury Povich. Stan Chambers sure wouldn't have stood for this.
