We only know about the one (?) successful attempt.
If fire danger is high , even a tossed cigarette can do it.

yeah...rugged area and terrain...have hiked the area in times past. Now about the fuel situation on my side of the mountain. Over the last 5-10 years we have had small spot fires over a wide area. Nothing too big..put out in a matter of hours..but there are miles of dead trees...heavy brush...and lots of open area that has not burned in the 30 years I have lived here. And the small community directly up behind us..Oak Glen is good population with all the lovely orchards. Oak Glen is ummmm 5 miles due north of me. Have hiked up there just for a Sunday walk.

You can see about 6-7-8 houses burning. I also just saw what looked like a man with a hose in the center of that mess. They went to commercial so I couldn't tell if it was a ff or a resident. The water stream looked very small.

MSNBC feed shows reporter with firefighters lighting backfires on Highway 18 by Arrowhead. Some residents still in denial -- refuse to leave, even though evacuation is mandatory.

The guy on the CBS feed was just pointing out a Phoscheck patch on someones house. .Apparently it is a fire fighting chemical of some sort. What is in it? Can it help that much?

My family evacuated Lake Arrowhead last Sunday.....we can only hope and pray that all in harm's way are safe.

I always thought the Lake Arrowhead area was a little piece of heaven. Big Bear too and of course, Silverwood Lake area.

Our hearts are broken for all the burned out families.

Talking about Pacific moisture and shift in winds. Did a controlled burn out here in NM a couple of weeks ago. With very dry fuel, it crowned the trees, even though temps were cool. Would have to be a lot of moisture to damp down these fires, IMO.
