No, I wasn't being sarcastic about ELF being sympathetic to AQ. If you watched the ANSWER rally on C-Span on Saturday (and needed a mind-numbing experience to round out your week), you'd see that the far far left sympathizes greatly with terrorist groups and communist/Stalinist dictators. (In AQ's case, they're the former, not the latter, of course.) But also remember that the guy who's been accused of trying to dismantle the electrical towers in Oregon is a strong supporter of Palestinian rights (remember who celebrated on 9/11?). There wouldn't be any direct ties to AQ, but sympathize with them? Certainly. And you can't get anymore anti-American that the ALF/ELF/Earth First on the left.

And also remember the construct of ALF/ELF/Earth First cells. They're modeled after concepts called "leaderless resistance" and "lone wolf" resistance. They act in a very small group or alone, only announcing their actions after the fact.

Then again, it could be someone who tossed a cigarette out their car window.

Where did the fires start?

If they were deep in the forests then it wasn't ELF.

If it was closer to populated areas, then it could well be ELF.
