Dr. Lee was last seen by others on late last June deep underground inside the laboratory of Jihari Chemical Company at An-byon, N. Korea. At the time, Dr. Lee told others that he would take a business trip to a biochemical weapons research complex near Sino-N. Korean border. The sudden disappearance of Dr. Lee drew keen interest of American CIA, British SIS, and Australian intelligence.
CIA, SIS, and MOSSAD have been long tracking the activity of Lee Chae-woo's special research team, after having learned that they were developing bioweapons selectively targeting "white people." The progress they had made caused grave concern among microbiology experts in the West.
After the Korean War, N. Korea started the biochemical weapons research facilities at 10 different locations including Kang-kye, Ham-heung, Wonsan, and Shin-uiju. There are 7 storage facilities including Hwan-chon, An-byon, and Sariwon. N. Korea mainly produced tear-inducing agent, blood-acting agent, vomiting agent, nerve agent, and suffocation agent. However, the production of an agent selectively acting on particular pigmentation, by using genetic manipulation, would be truly alarming to the world community.
According to Western intelligences, for last five years, Dr. Lee has headed a research team specializing on bubonic plague and small pox. He also conducted the human experiments on POWs from the Korean War.
This kind of experiments are considered as the crime against humanity according to the international law. Dr. Lee must know this. Then why did he escape and disappear? One can only have nothing but speculations at this point. He might have had a crisis of conscience and decided to defect, but was caught by Chinese intelligence. In this scenario, he might have been sent back to N. Korea and met his demise.
Such a speculation are said to be already circulating among Japanese intelligence. However, another piece of intelligence alleged that Dr. Lee was carrying more than a hundred pages of documents and photos of human experiments when he disappeared in Guang Zhou and already left for a third country. In this second scenario, these documents and photos could have been used to buy his and his family's safe passage out of China.
It is said that British and American microbiology research facilities have already begun to investigate this N. Korean research project.
If the (successful) escape of Dr. Lee Chae-woo turns out to be true, this means that he would be another big defector since the escape of Hwang Jang-yop(N. Korean party secretary.) That could be another serious blow to Kim Jong-il regime of N. Korea which is beset by power struggles as some suspect.
