Malvo, the sniper was a teenager (a "17 year-old kid") when he murdered several people deliberately.

I have a CCW permit and that actually puts more responsibilities on you than most liberals think. Especially if you are concientious and law abiding.

That is for certain.

if he was in fear and should have called 911

Bullets/knives/fists travel faster than Palm Beach Sherrif's Office.

All our hindsight is 20/20. The article is incomplete. NO ONE HERE knows the complete facts of the story. This is probably why the palm beach post left out the complete information. There HAS TO BE more information that is not reported. Otherwise, the homeowner would be in jail.

And obviously you ignored the constitution in your response. By inserting your own knee-jerk reaction as to doing EVERYTHING, when all you previously spoke of was a question on who has a right to own a gun you ignor your own argument.

Again - Who are these people that have no business owning guns besides criminals who have had their constitutional rights aborted?

It was your statement. SO, who are they?

Me too. I've had an incident when the "bad guys" did knock on the doors. Scariest thing in my life, what the police later explained is that burgulars want no trouble and try to quietly slip in and out of your home. Offenders willing to do the worst don't always think ahead.

Agreed. BTW this is the way most home invasions begin ... with a knock on the door. Once they're "in", your life, your women, everything is potentially at stake.

"But you will find that some posters on FR believe that training is "infringement" and think the poor kid got what he deserved"

Whatever you do , you never know what the outcome will be. That is why what ever you do , you have got to know that sometimes things happen.

Mischief = stuff happens
This is not the first time someone has gotten killed fooling around. sad.

"Shot in the back "

==

The article does NOT say he was "shot in the back".

It says he was shot, then he ran.

"Levin fired one shot, hitting Drewes, according to deputies. The boy ran into a neighbor's yard and collapsed.

The sheriff's office would not release the name of the teenager who was with Drewes Saturday morning. Nor would it confirm the family's assertion that morgue officials told them Saturday afternoon that Drewes was shot in the back. "

miami arrested a home invader who had an interesting tactic. Ring door bell and keep watch on peephole. When persons head blocks peephole, fire gun. Problem was there was more than one person in the house who escaped and later ID'd the thief.

Personally, I have had someone (some drunk person I did not know) pound on my door in the middle of the night. I know the fear that can grip you.

Similar circumstance about 12 years ago is what led me to arm myself. Middle of the night and the doggies on my bed started barking their fool heads off and wouldn't shut up. I finally got up and when I walked into the entry found someone leaning up against the front door.

My response was to call out loudly...I'm calling the police now, I want you to leave. He did. It was only about 6 minutes for the police to arrive but it seemed like a very long wait. And I realized how much could have happened in a very short time.

I hope now that I'm armed I would have handled it in the same way.

If your think everyone’s currently able to responsibly managing a weapon, you don’t know people.

In your opinion, who should be the arbiter to decide who is and isn't capable of responsibly managing a weapon?

Hat-Trick

I don't think this guy should have fired his gun at a door knocker. What say you?

I agree with you.

"What is so important that you are defending that you need a gun?"

First off this is the most stupid comment in the whole article. With that, I would say that this guy was way in the wrong to shoot the boy. The boy was silly to be out ringing door bells at his age but he didn't deserve to die for it. If the boy had been inside his property that would have been a different matter but you don't just start shooting because of a late night knock at the door even if you think that the person is holding a weapon. I think the homeowner should have yelled out, "I've got a gun that I'm not afraid to use in one hand and a phone that I'm using to dial 911 in the other--get off my property now!" Then he could have called the police at that point.

Even though he was not too smart to do what he did, I do feel sorry for the homeowner as well as the boy's family.

I'll wait to see the facts on the case before I want to see the guy crucified. Given the anti-gun bias of ordinary press hacks and the 'saintly' description of the kid, I wouldn't be suprised if the facts come out that the innocent youth was doing a bit more than innocently knocking on doors.

"how on earth did he get shot in the back?"

===

The article does NOT say, that he was shot in the back.

See my post 67 with the quotes from the article.

the proximate cause of this whole stupidity is the boy. The boy caused this whole event. He is SOL. This should be for the civil suit too. If the family sues the man, I hope the man countersues the boys estate and parents (who have liability in fl) for an equal amount. In fact he should sue them anyways to recover the cost of any criminal defense bills he has to endure because of this kids stupidity.

also, what is the stature of the homeowner?? is he a small, frail man? say he is 5'5" and 120 lbs....sees 6'2", 210 lbs in his doorway after midnite?? maybe these kids just liked messing with him..who knows...like ya'll said, we don't have all the facts, but gut instinct says there is more to this than has been shown so far.

at 16 and out at 12:30, the kid may have had a juvenile record. Do we know the race of the parties?

As a mother of 3,grandmother of 3, I don't see the boy as a bully. He was silly & immature. Ringing doorbells & running is a 10 year old trick. He was out late because he was 16.

"when all you previously spoke of was a question on who has a right to own a gun you ignor your own argument. "

When you approach me so rudely and so confused, thinking that because I said someone has no business doing something means that have no right to do something, I’m not going to be interested in talking to you..

I've heard of some people knocking on doors around here too that were planning on breaking in. A friend of mine said she was at home during the day when a knock came at the door. It was a woman. When no one answered the door, my friend saw the woman go across the street to a van and two large men got out and put on gloves then they proceeded to try her doors and garage door. Luckily, everything was locked and they decided to go elsewhere. They had done several burgarlies in the area --their M.O. was to use no forced entry but to just slip in when a door was unlocked.

I will reserve judgement on what I think about this case.

However, I will point out that there are a few people here at FR who, if the police were the shooters, would hasten to say "Good shoot!" if there were even the slightest inkling that the man had something, anything, in his hand that could have been construed as a weapon. ("What, don't you think police officers should have the right to defend their lives?") Furthermore, the man's name is released, and curiously, even the value of his house. If a police officer shoots someone under similar circumstanecs, they don't release such details, especially the name of the officer involved, "pending the results of an investigation." Here is more evidence of the caste system at work.
